Somerville Municipal Employees Association (SMEA) Political Endorsements of 2015
On August 26, 2015, the SMEA held the second annual political endorsement meeting in its long history. As part of the endorsement process, the candidates had to receive the approval of two-thirds of the Membership present and voting. Our endorsement committee took great care when creating this methodology to ensure it was conducted fairly and honestly, in order to accurately reflect the opinions of a large cross section of our Membership. SOA’s 2nd Annual Candlelight Memorial Vigil 9/15
It’s been a year since we held our first candlelight memorial vigil for those who we have lost to drug overdoses. Sadly, the number of deaths attributed to accidental overdose continues to rise. The state reports that 1,300 people died from drug overdoses in 2014, and many believe that that number is still low. Credit Union President Donates His Hair for Cancer
Somerville, MA—Stephen G. Burgess, President & Chairman of Somerville’s Credit Union donated his hair for a cancer charity organization in honor of his deceased friend and Air Force 416th Bomb Wing veteran Sam Froy. Sam Froy, who served our country alongside Stephen in the Vietnam War era working on B-52’s under the Strategic Air Command, recently lost to his fight against cancer.

Somerville Leads the Way in Police Youth Partnership
Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Chief of Police David Fallon, Superintendent of Schools Mary Skipper and Chief Fire Engineer Patrick Sullivan made an announcement this Wednesday morning in front of the John F. Kennedy School located at 5 Cherry St in Somerville about the Police Youth Partnership Program.
Beginning this school year, the Somerville Police Department and Somerville Public Schools, in partnership with the City of Somerville and Somerville Fire Department, will announce a unique partnership that seeks to increase relationship-building between public safety officials and young people in the City. The program to be announced is believed to be the first of its kind.
The Mayor, Superintendent of Schools, and Chiefs of Police and Fire discussed the program’s details, and how it will be implemented beginning on the first day of the 2015-2016 school year.
Members of the Somerville Police and Fire Departments where there in support of the joint efforts.
Wednesday was officially the first day back to school for students in Somerville.
