Reality Bites by James A. Norton

I am not alone when I say Donald Trump is looking better and better every day…
Think about it for a minute, political parties, rhetoric and specific issues aside, there are two typical types of strong Presidential candidates – war-mongers and welfare-state cheerleaders. Fortunately, this country needs something different. It needs a President with extensive business background with a working knowledge of economic principals both foreign and domestic. We need someone like Donald Trump, and although I want to vote for him, he probably will be his own undoing.

Getting back to experience – I’m talking real world experience – not just playing around with non-profits in grad school and holding nothing but political office your entire adult life. Business experience where money and power move mountains and foster prosperity. A good President will always realize that he/she knows nothing and needs to be surrounded by people who know what they’re talking about and can give good advice. That goes without speaking and will be important later on in this column.

I can’t imagine that Ronald Reagan would have ever gotten elected in 2015 because of the internet, but had no problem in 1980. He was the right guy for the right time – he was a movie star, a showman – who was very much the patriot and kept hammering the Soviet Union until the Cold War was no more. We needed that as a country.

I believe that we need a business man, who happens to be a showman, who will have the sense and sensibility to have the right people around him to guide him to the right path for the country, and who can actually use some of his own personal experience to bring about change and economic strength. In the past, we have had Presidents who were military men, some who were lifelong politicians who never held a job in the real world, and those who were too smart (and too nice quite frankly) for their own good.

It’s funny how people want to label the current and still living former Presidents for all our woes, but, over the course of our country’s history, that’s just part and parcel with the perception of the office itself. For those who don’t have a heavy knowledge of all 44 Presidents and their strengths/weaknesses and how they rate on the scale of good to awful, you’re going to have to trust me, we have had some really shitty Presidents in our past.

Bernie Sanders is a socialist who will never get elected because he’s too far left to be called a true Progressive and I’m not sure the country is ready for a Jewish President. Mike Huckabee is too far right and too much of a religious nut to get elected. Jeb Bush looks good on paper, but he is a Bush and he can’t seem to stop saying the wrong thing. Don’t even get me started on Hillary Clinton – that she could be contender is beyond me. Trump looks better and better as time goes on.

Look, we want someone who can fix the financial mess and yes, he plays fast and loose with his money, but, he is rich and it’s because of things he did (and his father before him, to be fair) and moves he made in the business world. Remember Ross Perot? He was a good candidate, but looked strange, and sounded stranger when he opened his mouth – by the time he could have been a contender and he should have shut his mouth and listened to his advisers, he was already dead in the water.

So now I watch Trump the showman at work and you have to admire that beyond his idiotic immigrant rhetoric and some of the nonsense that comes out of his mouth – he is doing something that no candidate since Obama got elected in 2008 has done, good or bad, and that is cause debate, create interest and promote discussion. Now we just have to wait and see if when the time comes, he doesn’t self destruct and turn into another Ross Perot flash in the pan.

So take a few minutes next time you want to hate Trump and at least give him some credit for causing debate in a time where nothing but violence seems to dominate the airwaves. You don’t have to like him, you don’t have to agree with him, but you do have to give him credit for not only being different, but for being the right guy at the right time – for a country that really needs it. #GMK
