Somerville music programs throughout the District are gearing up for another year of music learning and music-making. Free music instruction is offered to SPS elementary students in the following grades:

· Strings (violin, viola, cello and bass): Grades 4-6 at all K-8 schools, plus grade 3 at ESCS and Brown;

· Band (flute, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, alto sax and percussion): Grades 5 & 6 at all K-8 schools, plus grade 4 at Argenziano and Healey.

Students participating in Somerville’s music programs and needing to rent or borrow an instrument will have an opportunity to do so at one of two events this week. Instrument rentals are available to all students; instrument loans are available only to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

 

Tuesday, September 15, 3:00-8:00pm at Somerville High School: Instrument Rental Program (available to all students)

Acoustic Strings of New England (strings) and Needham Music Company (band) will be on hand to offer instrument rentals. Students must be accompanied by an adult, and the adult must bring a picture ID and a form of payment (check, bank card or credit card). Rental rates vary based on the instrument.

               String – for students in grades 4-6 at all K-8 schools, plus in grade 3 at ESCS and Brown

               Band – for students in grades 5 & 6 at all K-8 schools, plus in grade 4 at Argenziano and Healey

 

Thursday, September 17, 3:00-8:00pm at Somerville High School: Instrument Loan Program (available only to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch). There is a one-time loan fee for the school year of $20 for violin/viola, $30 for cello and $40 for bass, required upon instrument pick-up. Payment can be made by cash or check. Parents must sign a contract and assume responsibility for the instrument throughout the year. Drummers will need to purchase a pad and sticks for $20.

               Band – for students in grades 5 & 6 at all K-8 schools, plus in grade 4 at Argenziano and Healey
