SHS Class of ’45 Hosts 70-Year Reunion Sunday Sept 13th

Do you know someone who graduated from Somerville High School in 1945?

The SHS graduating class of 1945 will be hosting its 70-year reunion Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham. All members of the Class of ’45 are invited to join this great celebration. Cost is $40 for a Sunday afternoon meal. Free School Breakfast Every School Day

Students throughout the District are encouraged to get a good start to the school day with a free school breakfast. Not only does eating a healthy breakfast help students pay better attention and perform problem-solving tasks, it also helps students establish healthy eating habits that can last them a lifetime. Breakfast is available every school day starting at 7:30 a.m. at most K-8 schools and the Capuano, and starting at 7:00 a.m. at Somerville High School. Winter Hill will continue its Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) program this year.

Informational Meeting for SHS 2015 Musical, “Into the Woods”

There will be an informational meeting for high school students interested in being involved with the musical production of Into the Woods on Friday, September 18, after school in the Somerville High School band room. Students are invited to stop by to learn about opportunities to be involved both onstage and backstage. Auditions for this year’s musical will take place the following week.

 

Somerville Adult Evening School – Registration Open

Whether you’re interested in learning how to paint with acrylic or master conversational Greek, Somerville’s Adult Evening Program offers just the course you’ve been waiting for. Registration for fall courses is now open.

 

Register in person at Somerville High (81 Highland Ave.) on September 15, 17, 22, and 24 from 6:00-8:00pm or online at http://www.somerville.k12.ma.us/eveningschool. Questions? Call Evening School Principal Sophia Carafotes at (617) 628-2594.

 

Classes (6:00-9:00pm) begin Tuesday, September 29th and/or Thursday, October 1st. Classes include: Academic Recovery, Driver’s Ed, Sewing, Computers, Spanish, ESL, Real Estate License, Medical Interpretation, Zumba, or YOGA 5. Zumba or YOGA 5 special rates of $25 or $7/walk-in. The Somerville Mobile Farmers Market sells fresh, local produce at an affordable price. Anyone using SNAP or WIC receives a 50% discount, and a small portion of all full-price purchases supports produce for low-income families. FREE Technology Skills Classes by Appointment @ SCATV. SCATV wants to help you get comfortable in the digital world with free technology skills classes offered the third Tuesday of each month, 11:00am to 1:00pm. Classes are by appointment only and are offered at SCATV (90 Union Square). Learn Apple Computer Basics, How to Create Picture Slideshows, Google Research, and Internet Navigation. Mary Flynn Murphy’s 3rd Annual Dance Fair. Free dance classes, snacks & refreshments, and arts & crafts are on tap for the 3rd Annual Dance Fair at Mary Flynn Murphy Dance Studio (730 Broadway, Somerville) on Saturday, September 12th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Strike Up the Bands @ SomerStreets –September 20 (date correction). On Sunday, September 20, from noon to 4:00pm, enjoy music and fun at Strike Up the Bands @ SomerStreets. SomerStreets is the City’s take on the internationally-renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity. Strike Up the Bands @ SomerStreets takes place on Holland Street from Davis Square to Teele Square.

SCATV Media and Video Classes. Want to hone your media production or grant-writing skills? SCATV is offering great classes this fall to help you do just that! Coming up: Intro to Grant Seeking (Sept. 18, 10am-1pm), Beyond Grant Writing 101 (Sept. 25, 10am-1pm), Editing with Adobe Premier (Oct. 6, 13, 20, & 27, 7-9pm), and Intro to Studio Production (Oct. 14, 21, 28 & Nov. 4, 7-9pm). Champion Youth Art & Illustration Courses: Learn different drawing and painting methods at Art & Illustration classes offered by Champion Youth. Classes are for youth ages 4-13, and are offered every Monday for 11 weeks, September 28-December 14 (no class on 11/23/15). $7/class if paid in full for the entire session, or $8/class if paid weekly, plus a one-time required material fee of $25 for all new students.
