On Friday 3/14, Joao Baptista (SHS Junior) leaped 6’2.25″ to secure 8th place at the New Balance Indoor National Scholastic Track Championship Meet-Emerging Elite Division- held at the Armory Track in NYC. Later-Joao appeared to clear 6’4.25″ by plenty but somehow the bar fell off and was declared a miss. Also competing was Marcelo Brociner, who ran 1:59.45 in the Emerging Elite 800 meter race, placing 25th overall in a meet with runners from all across the U.S and 4 provinces of Canada.

Somerville’s Three Villens

Somerville's Three Villens

Three villens three person logo

Three guys from Somerville. They want to tell you how they feel about things happening in the world. Chances are if you’re a real (or wanna be) Villen, you know one of them.

So the three of us got together and had our first official recording of our podcast one night. It was a fun time, the three of us know each other pretty well, so it’s like old home week as we sit there bantering at each other, bitching, commenting and even singing together. The result will be posted here in just a little while we are happy with the results, will the world be? Will we really care? Probably not, but we do appreciate feedback – unless it’s negative, in which case we will find you and beat your sorry ass.

DATE CHANGE: Symphony Park Meeting

20140306-170101.jpg
** DATE CHANGE: Meeting will be held Wednesday, March 19. **
Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Ward 1 Alderman Matthew McLaughlin invite you to the third public meeting for the design of Symphony Park, located on the corner of Pearl and Florence Streets in East Somerville. Based on community input, the park is being designed as a neighborhood pocket park containing amenities for all age groups and abilities. The meeting will take place in the Community Room at Bryant Manor (75 Myrtle Street) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19. For more information and to view slideshows from the first two meetings, visit the City’s website at: http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/ospcd/parks-and-open-space/symphony-park

If you have additional comments or questions, please contact Luisa Oliveira at 617-625-6600 ext. 2529, or e-mail Loliveira@somervillema.gov.

Urban Agriculture “Growing up in Somerville”

“Growing up in Somerville, urban agriculture was simply neighbors sharing some of their prized tomatoes or freshly grown basil. Supporting urban agriculture today is a return to those roots,” said Mayor Joe Curtatone.

“Growing up in Somerville, urban agriculture was simply neighbors sharing some of their prized tomatoes or freshly grown basil. Supporting urban agriculture today is a return to those roots,” said Mayor Joe Curtatone.

Why is the Mayor talking about urban agriculture when it’s this cold out? The City, along with our partners at Groundwork Somerville, STEM Garden Institute, Shape Up Approved – Eat Well, and Somerville Public Schools, recently received a $36,877 urban ag grant from the state.

The grant is going to fund some very cool projects: A new raised bed and greenhouse will be built at the South Street Farm and a new hydroponics growing system will be set up at at Edgerly School. Along with providing students some hands on gardening experience, the school’s gardens will provide produce for the Somerville Mobile Farmers’ Market. You can’t get more local than that.

City to honor Mayor Curtatone, celebrate Teen Empowerment

Over 200 will attend Teen Empowerment’s Celebration of Hope and Caring on March 12, 2014 at the Center for the Arts at the Armory at 6:30 p.m. The event, chaired by Somerville Aldermen Jack Connolly and Mary Jo Rossetti, honors Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the City of Somerville for their dedication to improving youth development outcomes. It also marks Teen Empowerment’s tenth anniversary of working in Somerville. The Celebration will include performances by youth, a silent auction and interactive activities for the diverse crowd, and hopes to raise $60,000.

“Although many of the at-risk youth we’ve worked with over the last ten years in Somerville have dealt with significant struggles, they have overcome these to create safe spaces for their peers to come together toward positive change and to go on to accomplish great successes in their own lives,” said Teen Empowerment Executive Director Stanley Pollack. “We are celebrating their work as well as the good work of Mayor Curtatone and the City, which has led to dramatic positive change for the youth population in Somerville.” Teen Empowerment was invited to start working in Somerville by Mayor Curtatone in 2004. Since that time, TE has employed over 100 youth who have planned and implemented initiatives to involve thousands of their peers, ranging from youth-police dialogue sessions to youth social events to the annual Somerville Youth Peace Conferences.

A recent study of TE’s work in Soemrville by UMASS Boston’s Dr. Russel Schutt found evidence that TE’s efforts were responsible for a 50% decrease in the level of juvenile crime in Somerville’s highest crime neighborhoods and that compared to their peers, youth who worked at TE leave the program with higher levels of employability and greatly improved self-esteem and are more civically engaged, and these impacts are sustained over time.

The Center for Teen Empowerment, Inc. (TE) empowers youth and adults as agents of positive individual, institutional, and social change. Each year, TE youth conduct over 150 initiatives involving some 6,000 youth and adults in Boston and Somerville, MA and in Rochester, NY.

During its 22 year history, Teen Empowerment has brokered a lasting gang peace treaty, conducted police-youth reconciliation projects, worked to promote tolerance and understanding in Boston schools, and trained well over 2,000 youth to work as community organizers. TE’s work has touched the lives of more than 30,000 youth and adults. For more information, visit www.teenempowerment.org.

Somerville Police Officer Mario Oliveira Retires

20140301-163651.jpg

By William Tauro
In November 2010, Somerville Police Officer Mario Oliveira was shot multiple times as he served an arrest warrant on Gibbens Street at about 6:40 p.m. with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives. Officer Oliveira was immediately transported to the Massachusetts General Hospital and was in serious condition.
The man, who shot Officer Oliveira, was struck by return fire and transported to the Somerville Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Matthew Krister, 21, of Somerville.

A statement from the city said the suspect, who has not been identified, opened fire on officers immediately and police returned gunshots. Oliveira was hit by bullets in the stomach, hand and shoulder.

The suspect was shot and killed during the exchange, according to the District Attorney’s office who are investigating the shooting.

Letter to the Editor: We need your help

20140301-123234.jpg

20140301-123245.jpg
Dear Somerville News Weekly Editor,

I am writing you about with deep concern that New Washington Street in Somerville is once again turning into a storage area for trucks and tractor-trailers.

Truckers leave their rigs abandoned overnight over, the weekend , and sometimes all week long and are abusing our traffic and parking laws and ordinances in the city.

If they want to do business in the city of Somerville, they should pay taxes like me, pay for employee parking like me, they should pay rent like me and they should get licensed to operate their business like me!

The sad part is most of these trucks aren’t either registered properly and/or come from out of Somerville. Just read the writing on the sides “Chelsea?”

Please publish this in your paper so that the mayor’s office, Somerville Police and Traffic officials read it and hopefully will see this and do something about it.

Ps: If you notice below, I’m afraid to leave my last name just in case retaliation because I can’t afford to get my windows broken.

Thank you,

Bob, a concerned Somerville business owner
