Somerville Police Searching for Assembly Row Armed Robbery Suspect

On Thursday, August 30, at 2:24 p.m., Kay Jewelers at Assembly Row was robbed by a white (tanned) male or light skinned Hispanic male. The suspect entered the store and handed a shopping bag to the manager, and told him to “Fill it!” The suspect displayed what appeared to be a 1911 .45 caliber style fire arm. BOSTON (August 27, 2018) – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced the fourth human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in the state this year. The person is a woman in her 50s from Middlesex County who was never hospitalized for her illness. Three other cases were reported on Friday. SENATE OVERRIDES $2 MILLION FOR MASS CULTURAL COUNCIL VETO

The House 141-8, Senate 37-0 overrode Gov. Baker’s $2 million veto reduction (from $16 million to $14 million) in funding for the Mass Cultural Council. According to its website, the council is “ state agency that promotes excellence, inclusion, education and diversity in the arts, humanities, and sciences to foster a rich cultural life for all Massachusetts residents and contributes to the vitality of our communities and economy.”

BEACON HILL TALKS ON BAN ELEPHANTS AND EXOTIC ANIMALS FROM CIRCUSES

Legislation that would ban elephant acts from being used in traveling circuses and other shows in Massachusetts (H 418) is stuck in the House Ways and Means Committee where it has been since it received a favorable report from the Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture almost a year ago on October 17. SEAT BELT USE INCREASES IN BAY STATE

The Baker Administration announced today that seat belt use in Massachusetts rose by nearly 8 percent (from 73.7 percent to 81.6 percent) from 2017 to 2018. The study was conducted by the University of Massachusetts Traffic Safety Research Program. The survey estimates 115 lives were saved by seat belts in Massachusetts in 2016, but 45 additional lives would have saved at a use rate of 100 percent.

REP. BARBER SECURES GAS LEAKS REPORTING PROVISION IN CLEAN ENERGY BILL

Provision requires standards for gas companies to identify, measure, and report leaked gas

 

In a win for fixing gas leaks and for the Commonwealth’s clean energy future, State Representative Christine Barber of Somerville and Medford successfully secured a provision in the legislature’s recent clean energy legislation that defines lost and unaccounted for (LAUF) gas—the gas that consumers pay for, but is leaked unburned into the atmosphere from old pipes—and requires the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities to issue uniform standards for gas companies to identify, measure, and report amounts of leaked gas.
