Ordinance prohibits retailers from providing customers with single-use plastic bags at checkout

 

 

SOMERVILLE – Beginning Sept. 1, single-use plastic bags will be banned at checkout points throughout the City. The ban is the result of an ordinance – passed by the Board of Aldermen in Nov. 2015 – aimed at reducing solid waste and protecting waterways and other aspects of the environment. Municipal Modernization Bill Allows Cities and Towns to Adopt Lower Speed Limits

 

Municipalities now have new powers to make their streets and neighborhoods safer. Introduced as an amendment to the recently-adopted Municipal Modernization bill by State Representative Denise Provost of Somerville, the bill authorizes cities and towns to reduce the existing 30 mph speed limit to speed limits of 25 mph on local roads in “thickly settled” or business districts. The fight against the addiction epidemic in Somerville is a true community effort. We all have a role to play in ending the overdoses, reversing the stigma, and supporting those who are struggling with addiction or who are in recovery. Our elected leaders must be a part of these efforts, and in this election season it’s important to support the people who have shown that they are personally invested in this fight. I know that Tim Toomey is one of those people.

Cambrdge Police:65 years after CPL Ronald Sparks’ death, his nephew Bob Sparks received a call from the US Army’s Past Conflicts Repatriation Branch. They informed him that they had identified his uncle’s remains through a 100% DNA match and he would be coming home to Cambridge. CPL Sparks was a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient. Tufts expands capacity of Community Relations office with appointment of co-director

 

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (August 15, 2016) Tufts University has appointed Rocco DiRico, a Medford native with extensive political and public service experience, as co-director of its Community Relations office. DiRico will join longtime director Barbara Rubel in building and maintaining relationships with Tufts’ host communities of Medford, Somerville and the Boston neighborhoods of Chinatown, the Fenway and Mission Hill. This past Saturday September 12th, the Davis Square Theatre reemerged as The Rockwell, continuing its legacy of providing a home for the region’s flourishing arts community in honor of its late owner, Somerville business leader and restaurateur Ken Kelly (The Independent, Foundry on Elm, Saloon, Brass Union, River Bar). The new incarnation of the playhouse included the name dedication, an updated look, equipment upgrades and original programming curated by the theater.
