Somerville Set to Release Updated Plans for Broadway Magoun Reconstruction Project at November 4 Open House

Shaped by community input, the project aims to make sections of Broadway safer and transform the Magoun Square intersection.

SOMERVILLE–The City of Somerville is planning to redesign Broadway between Winchester Street and Central Street to increase safety, improve accessibility, reduce congestion, and create a more comfortable street for everyone.

As part of this process the Magoun Square intersection (Broadway at Medford Street) will be reimagined, sidewalks will be rebuilt, and the roadway will be fully repaved.

After a year of engaging community members, analyzing traffic patterns, and refining concept designs, the City is sharing updated plans with the community for feedback at an upcoming open house.

When: Wednesday, November 4, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Where: Healey School, 5 Meacham Street

At the open house, community members can explore different stations describing the design and development of the project. Attendees will be able to talk directly with project staff about their questions and comments. Food and beverage will be provided.

Following the open house, there will be other opportunities for people to participate in including an online survey, street outreach pop-up events, a virtual office hour, and more.

After gathering more feedback on the design through the fall, the project team will work over the winter to finalize the design and prepare for construction between 2027 and 2028.

More About the Design Process
This past spring, neighbors, community group representatives, small business owners, and workers shared their input on a conceptual design that included raised crosswalks, new crosswalks, protected bike lanes, and improved bus stops.

The City also presented three options for the Magoun Square Intersection (Broadway at Medford Street) focused on improving safety, providing more comfortable options for all people traveling through the intersection, and reducing congestion. At the upcoming open house the City will share the preferred option for the intersection.

In addition to the community feedback, the design is informed by Somerville’s commitment to Vision Zero (a commitment to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injury) and the City’s Bicycle Network Plan (a roadmap for expanding bicycle safety and features across the city).
