Building a Better Block in Winter Hill

   
 
About fifty residents took part in a community meeting in the shell of a new Winter Hill business last Monday. The community members met to share ideas and brainstorm a vision for the future of Broadway. The City of Somerville brought in urban planning firm Better Block to help lead discussion and take concrete steps towards improvements.

Somerville’s Giving Tuesday Kicks Off

   
 
GivingTuesday is the first Tuesday in December (this year that’s December 1!), and it is an annual global day of giving that helps to raise funds and awareness for important causes everywhere. In Somerville, 14 nonprofit organizations are joining forces to collaborate on a second-annual joint fundraising effort as part of the international GivingTuesday program. Police Body Cams & more in SNN #50

   
 

Police body cameras are also getting a lot of attention these days. Somerville is among the Massachusetts cities and towns that are taking steps to add the cameras to their policing strategy. Pilot programs around the state are getting a good response. But the new technology requires new policies, protocols and extensive police training. Ellie Romano reports.

Our proposed Constitutional amendment would create an additional tax of our percentage points only on annual income above $1 million. The new revenue generated by this tax could only be spent on quality public education, affordable public colleges and universities, and for repair and maintenance of roads, bridges and public transportation.

The Nations Oldest Federal Aid Program Just Expired

The gross neglect by our Congress is astounding. It just let the Perkins loan program expire, making it that much harder for young people to get a college education. We need more education and less hardship, not the other way around. 540,000 students received Perkins loans last year. Medford St. between Somerville Ave. & South St. to Undergo Emergency Repairs Thursday, Friday

   
  
As a result of Wednesday’s heavy rain and subsequent flooding, MWRA contractors will conduct necessary repairs on Medford St., between Somerville Ave. and South St., on Thursday evening from 6 to approximately 9 p.m., and on Friday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. During the work, Medford St. in this area will be closed to through traffic. Motorists are asked to consider alternate routes if possible, and to follow posted detours.
