The new law that would allow, starting July 1, 2023, undocumented/illegal immigrants to apply for a Massachusetts standard driver’s license is going to be on the November ballot for voters to decide whether to repeal it or leave it intact. “Fair and Secure Massachusetts,” the group spearheading the repeal campaign, submitted 71,883 voter signatures to get the question on the ballot, far more than the 40,120 signatures required. The House and Senate approved and sent to Gov. Baker a bill designed to protect “vulnerable road users” which includes pedestrians, constructions workers, emergency responders bicyclists, skateboarders, roller skates and wheelchair users. A key provision requires vehicle drivers, when passing a vulnerable user, to pass at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet when the motor vehicle is traveling at 30 miles per hour or less, and an additional foot of clearance for every ten miles per hour that the vehicle is traveling above 30 miles per hour.
The State Auditor Suzanne Bump has certified that the Department of Revenue’s (DOR) figures are correct and Massachusetts must return $2.9 billion to taxpayers based on Chapter 62F, a 1986 law approved by the voters. That law requires that tax revenue above a certain amount collected by the state go back to the taxpayers. Bump has determined that the net state tax revenues of $41,812,654,358 for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2022 is $2,941,499,731 above the allowable state tax revenues of $38,871,154,627. This past Sunday the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club of Somerville and the Chelsea Rotary Club hosted their Annual Veteran’s Cruise on the Boston Harbor.
The flotilla, carrying dozens of American veterans on vessels that consisted of over twenty donated privately owned power boats from members of Winter Hill and Wellington Yacht Clubs, shoved off from the docks of the Winter Hill Yacht Club in Somerville. At approximately 8:40am on Friday September 9, 2022 the Medford Police responded to the Brookline Bank at 201 Salem St. Medford, Ma for a bank robbery. The Suspect is a black male who is approximately 5’5” – 5’ 7” tall, medium build, wearing a dark blue hooded sweat shirt with the hood pulled up and covering his forehead to his eyes. SOMERVILLE – On Thursday, September 8th, the members of the Somerville Kiwanis Club gathered at the Mount Vernon Restaurant for the first joint meeting of District Kiwanis Clubs as well as local Service clubs since 2019. The annual gathering,, known as an Interclub Meeting, has not been held due to the restrictions and concerns caused by the Covid 19 pandemic. Kiwanis members from East Boston, Malden and Medford and Greater Boston Young Professionals and members of the Somerville Rotary Club and Lions Club attended the celebration which was themed, Halfway to Saint Patrick’s Day.

A key section sets aside $2.9 billion of the state’s projected surplus to be returned to taxpayers based on the recent “discovery” of 62F, a 1986 law approved by the voters. In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day on Wednesday, August 31, and Recovery Month in September, the City of Somerville will plant 15 purple flags on the City Hall lawn in memory of the 15 Somerville residents who died of an opioid-related overdose in 2021. A larger flag will also be on display in recognition of all Somerville residents who have died of an overdose. James E. Ribeiro, age 67, of Woburn formerly of Somerville passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Friday, August 19, 2022. He was the loving companion for 30 years of Karen Spinosa. James is also survived by his loving children, Jimmy Ribeiro of Medford, Ronnie Ribeiro of Lexington, Gina and her husband Peter Bratton of Medford, and his son from a previous marriage, James Tongen of Montana. Highland Gardens, 114 Highland Avenue, is a federal senior/young disabled housing complex. Among its amenities are spacious balconies. Outside the complex are comfortable benches surrounded by a very aesthetic landscape design.
The tenants quickly acknowledge how ideal it is to have the MBTA #89 bus stop right outside the complex! The direct bus route offers easy access to Davis Square and Lechmere Station. Needless to say, this direct route pleases everybody!

72-year-old Somerville resident succumbed to injuries after August 12 collision
SOMERVILLE – On Friday, August 12, a 72-year-old Somerville man was fatally injured in a collision while cycling near 1055 Broadway just outside of Teele Square. Somerville Police officers responded to the report of the crash at 11:20 a.m. The operator of the vehicle involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
