BOSTON – On Saturday, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute hosted the annual We the People competition, the culmination of a nationally acclaimed curriculum-based civic education program that helps students understand the history, philosophies, and evolution of constitutional government. The program was organized locally by the Massachusetts Center for Civic Education (MACCE), a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting civic education in our schools and communities. Ballot measure would give voters a say in an additional source of transportation and education funding

SOMERVILLE – The City of Somerville along with the cities of Lawrence, Lynn, Medford, New Bedford, and Northampton filed an amicus brief Monday, January 22, in support of allowing the proposed “Fair Share Amendment” to appear on the 2018 ballot. Also referred to as the “millionaire tax,” the proposed amendment to the State Constitution would add a 4 percent surtax on income over $1 million. Funding from the surtax would be slated for transportation and education.

Residents Encouraged to Return Completed 2018 Census Form

 

Over the next few weeks Somerville residents will be receiving the 2018 Annual City Census in the mail and we urge everyone to fill out and return theirs. High census participation provides an accurate population count and helps the City plan municipal services and adapt as the population changes. On Saturday,  January 20, 2018, I Officer John Howe was on duty for the Somerville Police Department assigned to west 6.

At approximately 940pm, I along with West 7 Officer Sergio Costa were dispatched to the rear of XXXXX located at 3XX Highland Ave for a report of a male wearing a gray hat , red bandana and a camo colored backpack spray painting a dumpster at the rear of the building.  Upon arrival I observed the dumpster which appeared to be freshly painted with black a red spray paint.

On Thursday, January 18, 2018, while on full uniform patrol in marked unit 781, I (Officer Patrick Canty) was dispatched to 1XX Perkins Street for a reported Breaking and Entering. Marked unit 784 (Officer Shaun Clark) was dispatched as back up.  While en route dispatche stated the suspect is a white male, wearing a tan jacket ,in his 30s or 40s with dark hair. On January 16, 2018, I, Officer Tim Van Nostrand, was on duty and assigned to uniform patrol in marked cruiser East 1.  At approximately 6:29pm, I randomly queried MA XXXXX as the vehicle operated westbound on Broadway, a public way.  The result of my query showed a revoked status to a Honda Civic.  The vehicle bearing these plates was an Infiniti G37 sedan.

Somerville News Weekly’s Special Person of the Week: Martin Polignone

Meet this week’s “Special Person of the Week:Martin Polignone.

Martin Polignone is a long time Cobble Hill resident and advocate for the elderly and disabled.

Martin is a double graduate of Boston College with a BA and Master’s of Administrative Science.

After being a small technology business owner with contacts and travel as far as the former Soviet Union and Russian joint ventures, Martin earned his law degree and works on the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Elder Hotline and was recently appointed as a Trustee on the Somerville Affordable Housing Trust.

Martin is also a member of the Ward One Democratic Committee , a former mediator in Somerville District Court and also served in the US Coast Guard Auxillary as a staff officer.

Martin is very proud to call Somerville his home.

Our hats are off to his true Somerville spirit!

HOUSE VOTES ON WATER BOTTLE FILLING STATIONS IN SCHOOLS

House Bill(S 251) creates a grant program to finance the costs of purchasing and installing water bottle filling station equipment in school buildings, playgrounds and athletic fields. The measure recommends the program be funded with at least $2 million but the money is still subject to legislative approval.

COST OF COLLEGE DISCUSSED ON BEACON HILL

Senate 39-0, approved and sent to the House legislation that would require all colleges in Massachusetts to give applicants who have been accepted to the college, a uniform financial aid information sheet, developed by the federal government, to assist with the financial part of the student’s decision whether to enroll in that school. Currently, an estimated 3,300 U.S. institutions across the nation, including 66 in Massachusetts, already use the information sheet.

Senate 39-0, approved the creation of a 7-member Senate committee to review the Federal Communications Commission’s December 14th ruling that repealed a 2015 Obama-era net neutrality regulation. The ruling overturned the regulation that required Internet service providers to treat all data on the Internet the same and barred them from blocking or slowing down traffic or offering “paid fast lanes.” The committee’s is charged with making recommendations and/or filing legislation that would protect Massachusetts consumers.

Tufts Neighborhood Service Fund Seeks Applications from Somerville Agencies  

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (Jan. 16, 2018) – Non-profit organizations in Somerville are invited to apply for grants from the Tufts Neighborhood Service Fund (TNSF).  The TNSF collects donations from faculty and staff at Tufts University throughout the year and then awards small grants to community-based, charitable organizations that serve Tufts’ host communities. All of the TNSF funds go to nonprofit organizations.

THE EFFECT OF THE FEDERAL TAX CHANGES ON THE BAY STATE

The Revenue Committee will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, January 23 at 11 a.m. in the Gardner Auditorium at the Statehouse on the impact on Massachusetts and its taxpayers of the many recent changes in federal tax law approved by Congress and signed by President Trump. The committee will also hear testimony on identifying and exploring creative ways in which the state might respond to counteract any ill-effects of the federal changes.

SECRETARY GALVIN ANNOUNCES DATE OF 2018 STATE PRIMARY ELECTION

Secretary of State Bill Galvin announced that the 2018 state primaries will be held on Tuesday, September 4 instead of Tuesday, September 18, the original date established by law. This year September 18 coincides with the important Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. If there is a conflict with a religious holiday, state law requires Galvin to move the primary to a date within seven days of the second Tuesday in September, which this year is September 11. That gave Galvin a choice of the 15 days from Sept. 4 until Sept. 18 to hold the election.

Move Over Law Expands To “MOVE OVER” FOR UTILITY AND CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES

The House gave initial approval to a bill expanding the current “Move Over Law” to include public utility and construction vehicles. Current requires drivers to reduce their speed to that of a “reasonable and safe speed for road conditions” when they spot an emergency vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the highway. It currently applies only to fire trucks, police vehicles, ambulances, disaster vehicles and highway maintenance vehicles.

State Auditor Suzanne Bump has recommended that a total of $1,063,978 be reimbursed to the state’s 351 cities and towns to cover the costs incurred for complying with a 2014 state law requiring that all voters be provided the option of early voting in the 2016 General Election.
