Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Sondra NOONAN (Possession A, Shoplifting, & Boston/Beverly Warrants)

On January 11, 2018, at approximately 19:05 hours, I was contacted by Home Depot Loss Prevention Officer, XXXXX, regarding a female shoplifter. Officer Canty and I made our way to Home Depot, and as we arrived, XXXXX updated us that the female was exiting the store through the contractor’s entrance.

As we pulled up, we located a female, later identified as Sondra NOONAN, walking out of the store carrying a reusable shopping bag. It should be noted a common tactic of shoplifters is to use reusable shopping bags to conceal items, as they are durable and can be used multiple times. As soon as we approached, NOONAN put her head down and handed us the shopping bag. She was cooperative, and told us that everything she stole was in that bag.

Once inside the loss prevention office, XXXXX totaled up the stolen merchandise, consisting of five butane torches, two LED flashlights, two bolt cutters, and a butane gas refill canister, which amounted to $168.70. NOONAN admitted she was also going to take paint, but had left it in the shopping cart she had used in the store. XXXXX commented that the items NOONAN stole were very specific, and she told us that she was stealing for her boyfriend, XXXXXXX, who is in construction, and gave her a list of items to steal for him. In NOONAN’s belongings, we located a “shopping list” of items she was supposed to steal, which is another common tactic of shoplifters.

When asked, NOONAN told me there may be needles inside a red glasses case in her property, which belong to her boyfriend. When Officer Canty opened the glasses case, he located two needles, one of which had a reddish-brown liquid substance inside of it, ready for use. Inside the glasses case there was also a baggie, commonly used to hold “rocks” of narcotics, such as heroin, as well as a glass pipe containing a white, crystallized substance, typically used to smoke narcotics. While neither substance was tested, based on my training and experience, the substance in the needle was most likely heroin. All items in the glasses case will be submitted for destruction.

NOONAN was arrested for Shoplifting over $100 by Concealment, Possession of Class A, as well as two unrelated warrants. She was handcuffed (double-locked), and transported to the station by Unit 200, where she was booked in the usual manner.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Reece
