On January 28, 2018, at 12:09 hours, I received a phone call from XXXX Loss Prevention Officer, XXXX, who told me a male party had just stolen multiple pairs of sunglasses. XXXX believed the suspect was a well-known shoplifter, Darryll LYDON, and said he was heading East on Grand Union Blvd., in the direction of Home Depot, and was wearing a green jacket and blue jeans.
LYDON has stolen sunglasses from XXX on at least ten occasions. He typically walks into the store, heads directly to the sunglasses display, grabs as many pairs as he can, and runs out of the store in under one minute. XXXX told me that during the current incident, the suspect had entered XXX at approximately 12:06 hours, grabbed about eight pairs of sunglasses, and exited the store in approximately 30 seconds, while causing the store’s theft detection sensors to go off.
I located a male matching KRAUSE’s description walking along Grand Union Blvd., in between Foley Street and Revolution Drive. As the male turned and headed into the Bank of America ATM, I was able to confirm the suspect was LYDON. While I waited for backup to arrive, he attempted to draw money out of the ATM, but appeared to be unsuccessful, and made his way into Home Depot. It should be noted LYDON has a history of narcotics abuse, and has been known to pull hypodermic needles on loss prevention officers who have tried to stop him. I immediately located LYDON inside the store, as Officer Collazo arrived on scene. He repeatedly insisted he was never in XXX, since he had been trespassed the last time he was caught for stealing sunglasses back in December. He made statements that he usually takes about twelve pairs of sunglasses at a time, and has a problem with both stealing and narcotics. LYDON told me he hadn’t stolen sunglasses from XXX since the December incident, and when I told him I had him on camera stealing from XXX on 1/20/18, he insisted it wasn’t him, because had been in detox. It should be noted a typical detox lasts about a week, and LYDON told me multiple times he had gotten out of detox the previous day, 1/27/18, meaning he could have committed the theft before entering the detox facility.
I conducted a frisk of LYDON, and located a Sheffield folding knife in the right front pocket of his jeans, which is in violation of Somerville City Ordinance 9-96. I did not locate any sunglasses on LYDON’s person; however, I believed he had ditched them when he saw me following him in my cruiser on Grand Union Blvd. XXXX and additional Somerville Police units attempted to retrace LYDON’s steps, but were unable to locate the stolen merchandise. As LYDON was being detained for the theft, I received a call from Assembly Row Security Officers, who told me they witnessed the incident on camera. Security Officer XXXXX had seen the direction my cruiser was headed, and witnessed LYDON duck between two parked cars, and appear to be fidgeting with his clothing. Assembly Row Security checked the area where LYDON had been, and located eight pairs of Saks sunglasses, with sensors still attached, underneath the parked Honda. XXXXX told me the total value of the stolen sunglasses amounted to $743.90.
I placed LYDON under arrest for Larceny over $250, and Violation of City Ordinance 9-96 (possession of the knife). He was handcuffed, transported to the station in Unit 200, and booked in the usual manner.
