   House 151-0, (no Senate roll call) approved a new law that allows donors to contribute the maximum $1,000 twice per year to a candidate who runs for the Legislature in a special election and a regular election in the same year. REGULATE UBER AND LYFT

   House 142-15, (no Senate roll call) approved a new law that regulates Uber, Lyft and other Transportation Network Companies (TNCs). The new law establishes a new division within the Department of Public Utilities, funded by the companies themselves, to oversee the licensing of the companies and drivers, enforcing penalties and all other issues. The Somerville Teen Shoveling program is a paid program for youth to shovel out seniors after a snow storm in Somerville. Interested youth need to sign up with the Office of Commissions, be available when there’s a snowstorm to shovel a senior’s home, and will receive a payment for each house they shovel out. On Friday December 09, 2016 at approximately 1601, I Officer Randy Isaacs along with Officer Ubeda and Sergeant Shackelford were dispatched to 14 McGrath HWY, (Star Market) for a shoplifter in the security office. Upon arrival I met lost prevention who informed me that has a male party that as stolen from the store numerous times and as late as October 28, 2016. Lost prevention also stated that he observed the individual place a item in his back that was later valued at $66.08. Also after approaching the individual and escorting him back to the security office, there were also three bags of shrimp valued at $25.98 per. $1 BILLION ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PACKAGE (H 4569)

   House 157-0, Senate 38-1, approved a new package allowing the state to borrow money over five years as part of an economic development package aimed at boosting the economy, creating jobs, workforce development and infrastructure investment. The biggest ticket item is $500 million for the MassWorks infrastructure grant program which is promoted as one-stop shopping for cities and towns and other eligible public entities seeking public infrastructure funding to support economic development and job creation. APPROVED $50 MILLION TO COMMUNITIES FOR SMALL BRIDGE REPAIRS

 House 158-0, Senate 38-1, approved a $750 million package for transportation projects across the state. The package includes $700 million for highway improvements and $50 million for a new grant program to fund the repair of cities’ and towns’ bridges that are 20 or less feet in length. Governor Baker Slashes $98 Million in Spending

Gov. Baker last week cut $98 million from the $39 billion-plus fiscal 2017 state budget to address what he says is the estimated state shortfall unless revenues dramatically increase.Cuts include $7.6 million for the Office of Travel and Tourism; $6.4 million for the State Police; $1.9 million for the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services; $665,000 for the Emergency Food Assistance Program; $630,000 for the Stop Stroke Program; $300,000 for Prostate Cancer Research; $250,000 for the School Breakfast Program; and $185,000 for domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and survivor services. Retired Deputy Fire Chief, Robert L. “Bob” Gover, Somerville Fire Department, a longtime resident of Stoneham and former resident of Somerville and Malden, entered into eternal life on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at his daughters home following a 2 month courageous battle with cancer. Somerville Community Path Paving Coming in Spring


A section of the Community Path will be repaved in the spring of 2017 thanks to funding through the Community Preservation Act (CPA). The Friends of the Community Path worked with the City on a plan to repave the path between Cedar and Grove streets. There are also plans to make improvements to the path west of Davis Square later in the year. The new pavement will make for a smoother journey for people using any mode of transportation on the Community Path.

 

Somerville Applicants Sought for Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change

 

Mayor Curtatone is seeking applications from Somerville residents to serve on the Mayor’s Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change (CEUCC). The CEUCC advises the City and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and Environment on climate change and energy policy issues and assists the City in program design and outreach related to these topics.

Somerville Seeking Residents to Advise on Capital Improvement Projects

 

The City of Somerville announced today that it is forming a community advisory committee to assist in the review and recommendation of capital improvement projects for upcoming fiscal years. The committee, which will comprise five community members, will work with City staff to review and provide feedback and recommendations, on behalf of the entire community, on project prioritization.
