This past Saturday afternoon, Somerville Police Officer Ross O’Meara was injured on a police motorcycle that he was driving that collided with a motor vehicle while on his way to Saturday’s Power Push event on Broadway.

In a statement from Somerville Deputy Police Chief Michael Cabral regarding the injured officer he said that: “Somerville Police Officer Ross O’Meara was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was treated and released.

He suffered non life threatening injuries.

He is sore, but is home. I spoke with him and he is hoping to make a speedy recovery. thank you!”

Deputy Chief Cabral also stated that “there was minor damage to the Somerville Police motorcycle.”

“On this week’s “Election 2014 Special of Greater Somerville”, which airs tomorrow night at 7:30 on SCATV, Channel 3 in Somerville, Martha Coakley, the Attorney General and candidate for Governor of Massachuesetts, spoke at length with host Joe Lynch about her campaign, the issues facing Massachusetts and her vision of the future of the state. Sean was a member of the MIT Police Department when he was killed one year ago in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing. Prior to joining the MIT force, Sean had worked in a civilian position at the Somerville Police Department and would have joined the department as an officer last July. He was posthumously sworn in as a Somerville police officer in August.

The Public Safety Building will be open to the public for reflection, remembrances, or memorials in honor of Sean Collier and other individuals and families affected by the events in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon.

Highway Pollution Impacts Poor, Immigrants
Somerville, MA, April 8, 2014 – Because of where they live, many of the city’s lower income and immigrant families are disproportionately at risk of contracting air pollution-related diseases. A recent Tufts study notes that air quality drops in the areas nearer to Route 93, the same areas with two of the city’s affordable housing developments and with neighborhoods that have more reasonable rents and home prices. Somerville, MA, April 8, 2014 – Somerville’s first responders and agencies are taking steps to try to prevent the sometimes-fatal drug overdoses that result from the use and abuse of heroin and painkillers. The Somerville Recreation Department announces that the Somerville Youth Football and Cheer Program has been invited to play in the newly formed Commonwealth Youth Football Conference (CYFC). The CYFC is affiliated with American Youth Football, which is a “Grade Based, Age Protected” youth football league.

We are proud to be able the offer every child in our community an equal opportunity to play youth football and cheer. CYFC Communities include Melrose, Medford, Charlestown, SOMERVILLE and Stoneham

Recently, Somerville and other Massachusetts communities have seen an increase in phone scams, incidents where an anonymous caller may have seemingly private knowledge about a victim, their family or finances and use that knowledge to fraudulently obtain thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Somerville Arts Council and East Somerville Main Streets have teamed up to put on a series of monthly block parties. Next Thursday, April 17, will be the first block party. Stop by Chuckie Harris park from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to enjoy music, art, and playing at the park.

At approximately 8:17 pm Thursday evening, Somerville Firefighters responded to a call located at 31 Warren Avenue regarding an “out-of-control fire pit” that safety concerned neighbors were forced to call the Somerville Police for assistance with.

The Somerville Police immediately contacted the Somerville Fire Department who then responded to the location with water to extinguish the out-of-control fire pit’s flame.

Fire pits are iIllegal in the city of Somerville and especially where Somerville’s homes are built so close to each others property lines and also taking into consideration the last two weeks tragic Brick-stone fire loss tragedy of two fallen heroes that occurred in the Back Bay of Boston and the massive 8 alarm fire that displaced almost a dozen people in East Boston the other night, that you would think that people would stop and think twice about lighting a fire pit or causing any sparks that would pose any threat to neighboring homes and lives.
