Somerville Police Officer Mario Oliveira Retires

20140301-163651.jpg

By William Tauro
In November 2010, Somerville Police Officer Mario Oliveira was shot multiple times as he served an arrest warrant on Gibbens Street at about 6:40 p.m. with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives. Officer Oliveira was immediately transported to the Massachusetts General Hospital and was in serious condition.
The man, who shot Officer Oliveira, was struck by return fire and transported to the Somerville Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Matthew Krister, 21, of Somerville.

A statement from the city said the suspect, who has not been identified, opened fire on officers immediately and police returned gunshots. Oliveira was hit by bullets in the stomach, hand and shoulder.

The suspect was shot and killed during the exchange, according to the District Attorney’s office who are investigating the shooting.

Letter to the Editor: We need your help

20140301-123234.jpg

20140301-123245.jpg
Dear Somerville News Weekly Editor,

I am writing you about with deep concern that New Washington Street in Somerville is once again turning into a storage area for trucks and tractor-trailers.

Truckers leave their rigs abandoned overnight over, the weekend , and sometimes all week long and are abusing our traffic and parking laws and ordinances in the city.

If they want to do business in the city of Somerville, they should pay taxes like me, pay for employee parking like me, they should pay rent like me and they should get licensed to operate their business like me!

The sad part is most of these trucks aren’t either registered properly and/or come from out of Somerville. Just read the writing on the sides “Chelsea?”

Please publish this in your paper so that the mayor’s office, Somerville Police and Traffic officials read it and hopefully will see this and do something about it.

Ps: If you notice below, I’m afraid to leave my last name just in case retaliation because I can’t afford to get my windows broken.

Thank you,

Bob, a concerned Somerville business owner

The site includes a variety of data including property values and city revenues, to the results of the city’s Happiness Survey and the number of temporary food permits approved each year. Through maps and charts you can learn more about the City and your neighborhood.

The Key Systems Indicators site was designed by City staff using free, open source resources. In that spirit, we’ve also shared the code to our site for others interested in creating a similar website: https://github.com/DanielHadley/SomervilleSystems.

Let us know what you think of the new Key Systems Indicators page and what data you’d like to see added next.
