About Day of the Dead
Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends, family members, and ancestors. The celebration takes place on November 1 and 2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. To commemorate the life of loved ones, family members construct altars to pay tribute those who have passed on. In honor of this fine tradition, the Somerville Arts Council would like to invite folks to get creative and design their own version of a Day of the Dead altar.
