Winners to be selected, presented during Historic Preservation Month in May 2014

SOMERVILLE – The Somerville Historic Preservation Commission (SHPC) is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Preservation Awards. During its annual celebration in honor of Historic Preservation Month in May 2014, the SHPC will honor Somerville residents who performed significant restoration or maintenance efforts on designated historic buildings, or on non-designated buildings erected before 1963. A Special Veteran Group Presentation Tempered Steel’s Wounded Warriors came to Holland Street to speak to the Somerville Council on Aging Veteran’s Group on Monday

Luana Schneider and Guest speaker, Staff Sergeant George “Chris” Campbell, a disabled/wounded veteran, presented a touching multi-media presentation and discussion. Many Older Veterans were able to relate to the stories shared that day as well as share their own thoughts, stories and reflections about their service. It was a great time had by all and special opportunity for healing the wounds, united together.

Somerville, MA — Mark Niedergang announced that he has received endorsements from State Representative Carl Sciortino; Somerville Aldermen Rebekah Gewirtz and Tony Lafuente: and Somerville School Committee members Adam Sweeting, Christine Rafal and Paul Bockelman. Niedergang is a candidate for Ward 5 Alderman and has represented Ward 5 on the Somerville School Committee for eight years.

Carl Sciortino, State Representative, 34th Middlesex District (Somerville and Medford) said: “I’ve known Mark for 10 years. I’ve watched him do a great job representing Ward 5 on the School Committee. He studies the issues, works hard, and is always well-prepared. He’s the best person for the job of Ward 5 Alderman.”

Somerville Advisory Committee Members Needed for Union and Gilman Squares

Union and Gilman squares need your help: We’re looking for residents, property owners, members of the business community and other community representatives to serve on two advisory committees for Union Square and Gilman Square that will advise the city on strategic planning decisions and development in both squares over the next two years. Both Union and Gilman face a lot of changes as the Green Line Extension comes to Somerville and we want to be prepared. Somerville Company Burning The Midnight Oil Manufacturing 2013 World Series Championship Banner

The 2013 World Series Championship banner that is to be hung in Boston’s Fenway Park is being manufactured as we speak by Flag Graphics of Allston Street right here in Somerville.

Tony Lafuente’s Flag Grapics has been manufacturing the flags for the champs of all our Boston sports teams for years.

This coming Saturday the new 2013 World Series Championship banner will be Mounted permanently at Fenway Park.
