The Annual Candlelight Vigil for Domestic Violence Awareness Month is this Wed., Oct. 2, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 220 Washington St. Join the Office of Somerville Commissions in raising awareness of domestic violence and the resources available to victims. This year’s speaker is Corey Yarbrough of the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition. Anti-violence agencies will be in Union Square starting at 5:30 p.m. to share information. http://bit.ly/1blpfSl

Capt “JR” of Sambuca Charters who stars in Nat Geo’s new tv hit series “Wicked Tuna” visited with the staff of The Somerville News and BostonNewsGroup.com this past Saturday evening in Somerville to offer his congratulations on the new opening.
Bostonnewsgroup.com and The Somerville News Weekly are currently considering putting together a “Charity Boston Harbor Tour Cruise as well as a Charity Fishing Trip Raffle aboard the two Somerville News and Bostonnewsgroup.com news boats to benefit Somerville Lions Club charities that explore eye research and help to find a cure for blindness.

Please follow the rules at our home field during the games. All players must go onto the field by crossing on the carpet, NO CLEATS on the track, NO Gatorade, Bags or Back Parks on the field.
All families please take a seat and don’t stand on the walk way. We must keep the walk way clear for emergencies.

Mark your calendars: The East Somerville by Designcharrette is coming up and we need your ideas. Join planners, city staff, and your neighbors Mon., Sept. 30th through Wed., Oct. 2, to talk about the future of East Somerville. The charrette is taking place in a currently vacant storefront at 122-124 Broadway and will feature open studio time, discussion groups on specific topics, and Spanish and Portuguese translation in the evening. The results are in and Somerville Public Schools showed phenomenal growth on MCAS tests in 2013. Being the data lovers that we are, we’ve been going through the numbers and have found lots of great news in the latest test results. Some highlights include: Somerville High made a 2-level jump to a Level 1 Designation; the district’s Student Growth Percentile surpassed almost all districts with 1,000+ students; there was a notable rise in the number of students scoring advanced or proficient in math and English language arts.
