It feels right that at this time of the year, the week of the celebration of America’s Declaration of Independence, as a good time to honor WWII vet, Somerville’s Sgt. Henry Hansen.

It was he, along with others in his combat unit, who raised the first American flag on the mountain top at Iwo Jima, Feb 23, 1945. Unfortunately, within the week, on March 1st, Henry was killed in action.

Erin DiBenedetto, candidate for State Representative for the 34th Middlesex District, gave out free popsicles at Somerville’s 2014 Independence Day Fireworks to hundreds of veterans, elderly, and children that came to enjoy the event. The fireworks event, which is celebrating its
10th anniversary this year, had record-breaking attendance.

Richie’s wake is going to be this Wednesday from 4-8 in Arlington at Keefe funeral home. Funeral will be Thursday morning
