As a proud born and raised Somerville citizen
As well as a resident of the
Prospect Hill area ,we have noticed and wondered why there has not been a flag up on the Prospect Hill tower for a long period of time. Our Somerville High student 15-year-old asked the question to both my husband and I. We as Proud American’s, especially in the
“All American City” especially the First American flag being raised in our city, should be proudly displaying our American Flag.I would have never thought that this would not be of utmost of Importance, that our Flag is where it belongs.

SYHA is hosting a holiday party for SYHA adults on Friday December 6, 8:00 pm at Caseys Tavern (173 Broadway, http://www.caseyssomerville.com).

St Clement Anchormen Stun Cathedral Again 28-6

The St Clement Football team held Cathedral the defending Super Bowl Champs to just 8 points in the Division 6 North Semi -Finals on Saturday, November 9th at Dilboy Stadium. Both teams were scoreless in the 1st quarter showing great defensive work. In the second quarter, lineman Connor Sullivan (Charlestown) intercepted the ball and scored on a 5 yard interception return. Deron Hines ran the ball for 117 yards and set up an 11yd touchdown pass from QB Michael Sullivan (Everett) to Khaneil Bruce (Everett) who scored 3 TDs in the game. Cathedral answered with a TD just before the half to make the score 16-8.

In the second half St Clement continued to show stellar defensive holding Cathedral scoreless. MacAllen Marcelin (Medford) intercepted the ball in the end zone to steal a TD from Cathedral leaving them scoreless at the end of the 3rd. Khaniel Bruce (Everett) had a pick 6 run of 25 yards and caught his third TD pass from QB Sullivan to make the score 28-6 sealing the win for the Anchormen.

“This feels incredible. The team played so well” said Colin Walsh who is in his 11th year as the head coach. The win is their 5th straight victory and is their best record since the 1984 team’s Super Bowl run. The Anchormen will face Boston Latin Academy in the Division 6 Noth Final next Saturday, 11/16 at 6 pm at Dilboy Stadium. The winner will punch their way to play in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

Mama Tauro has 5 sons, 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Emily Tauro is the wife of the late Patrick Tauro who was the founder of Pat’s Auto Body & Painting of Somerville.

On Sunday, November 10th immediately following their 11:00 game (around 12:30), the 2002 Boston Stars team is holding a “Shooting for the Cure With Jack ” team event in the tennis court adjacent to the Somerville Rink. The boys will be taking practice shots to help reach their goal of 1,000 shots!

Each team member has committed to making 1,000 practice shots during the month of November and will collect pledges to support research to benefit Cure NF with Jack. (www.curenfwithjack.com). Jack Burke is an eight-year-old boy fighting neurofibromatosis. Although he currently lives in Atlanta, his father, Jake, is originally from Medford. Jack has a tumor on his brain stem and is currently undergoing 15 months of chemotherapy. This amazing boy has spoken before Congressmen and raises money in hopes of finding a cure for this genetic disorder.

The idea for “Shooting for a Cure for Jack” came from brothers Thomas and Andrew McGaffigan, and the entire team is on board with the effort.

Abbie Barrett & The Last Date have been featured regularly on WXRV The River, and in American Songwriter and Performing Songwriter magazines. She was Timberland’s artist of the month in November, 2011; her song “On the Range” was included in CMT’s Cool Album Cuts that same month. She attributes much of her songwriting style to Neil Young, though she draws on a wide range of influences. Players will be assessed and assigned to practice squads by school year group (5-8). Once tryouts and team selection are complete, team practices for the travel season begin. Practices will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings. The game schedule begins in early December and runs through the last week of February. Typically games are played on Saturday and Sunday throughout the season. Home games are played at the Healey School.

THE HOUSE AND SENATE: Beacon Hill Roll Call records the votes of local representatives on six roll calls and local senators on one from the week of November 4-8.

$1.4 BILLION FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING (H 3727)

House 151-0, Senate 39-0, gave final approval to a bill allowing the administration to borrow $1.4 billion over five years for public and affordable housing. Provisions include $500 million to renovate and modernize many of the state’s 45,000 public housing units; $55 million in loan guarantees to assist homeowners with blindness or severe disabilities to make their homes accessible; and $45 million for loans for the development of community-based housing for individuals with mental illness and intellectual disabilities.

SOMERVILLE – In cooperation with the City of Somerville, Tufts University is conducting work at the intersection of Packard Avenue and Powder House Boulevard to improve pedestrian safety infrastructure. The project, which entails the expansion of the sidewalks at each of the four corners of the intersection, will necessitate the temporary closure of the intersection on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Detours will be in place during these hours, as follows:

• Powder House Blvd. westbound will be closed at Burnham Street. Traffic will be detoured onto Burnham St. and onto Broadway to Packard Ave.
• Powder House Blvd. eastbound will be closed at Burnham Street. Traffic will be detoured onto Packard Ave. to Broadway and then to the Powder House Rotary.

Police details will be present during all construction to aid in traffic flow and project safety.

SOMERVILLE – The next phase of the City’s Somerville by Design community planning process in Davis Square will take place Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Center for Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave. The meeting will be structured as an open house-style plan presentation to allow participants to get an in-depth understanding and discussion of the topics they care most about. The open house structure is informed by community feedback during the City’s May 21 Crowdsourcing Event, two Visioning Sessions held July 17 and July 30, and a three-day, 36-hour public Design Charrette held Sept. 9, 10 and 11.
Somerville by Design is a cutting-edge approach to community planning that uses resident know-how to solve challenging physical planning and urban design issues. It makes planning fun, using highly visual, interactive techniques such as “Open Studio” design sessions, neighborhood meetings, block walking and online surveys. Most importantly, it provides multiple ways for the public to get involved in generating and refining physical design plans that are driven by community members’ preferences and creative ideas. In 2012, hundreds of residents and businesspersons participated in the Somerville by Design “Station Area Planning Series” for Gilman Square, Lowell Street / Magoun Square, and Ball Square neighborhoods that will soon be served by the Green Line Extension.

The Somerville Kiwanis Club appointed Rui Domingos, Chief Executive Officer at CPCU Credit Union, as the 2013-2014 President. Domingos officially took on the role of President on Sunday, September 29, 2013 during the Kiwanis President and Officer Installation ceremony held at the Atasca Restaurant in Cambridge, MA.  Officers installed for the 2013-2014 year include Anthony Ciccariello as President Elect, Antonia Shelzi as Vice President, Isaac Machado as Immediate Past President, Arnold Knox as Treasurer, and Past President George McLean as Secretary.

Domingos’ primary goal for the coming year is to grow the club’s membership. He hopes to utilize existing programs that have proven successful in the past as a way to attract new members and showcase that the Kiwanis is a relevant community organization worthy of community membership. The Somerville Kiwanis Club attributes their success in prior years to their unique programs including Reading is Fundamental, Bike Safety Day, Historical Perspectives, etc.

The Somerville Fire Department responded to a reported accident at the intersection of Ivaloo Street and Harrison Street at 1044 am on Tuesday, November 5th. A cement mixer owned by the Benevento Corp. had snagged overhead lines pulling a wooden utility pole down. This resulted in live electrical lines falling onto the truck. The electrical lines caused the truck to become energized and resulted in two fires to erupt on the truck. Firefighters used dry chemical extinguishers to put out fires at the motor area of the mixer and between the rear wheels of the vehicle. During all this, the driver was trapped in the cab of the truck due to the energized electrical lines. After approximately 20 minutes, NStar arrived and killed the electrical power to the area allowing the driver to safely exit his vehicle. In addition to the damaged pole, electrical service wires were pulled off the home at 3 Harrison Street.

Our condolence to the family of Florence “Flo”
Ribeiro on her recent passing this past week. Flo was larger than
life with he golden personality and her wonderful smile. Flo was
mother to former Somerville Police Officer James Ribeiro and she
was wife to everybody’s good friend, the Late Gil Ribeiro. She
worked at Somerville District Court for 25 years and was the first
woman in Masachusetts to be appointed a constatble for the City of
Somerville Flo was a very nice lady and will be sadly missed by
many here in the Ville!

Somerville firefighters have responded to four house fires this week. None of these fires is considered suspicious. Somerville firefighters were kept busy during a six hour period on November 3rd and 4th responding to two porch fires. The first fire was reported at 9:02 pm on Sunday evening. Firefighters responding to 45 Kidder Avenue found fire burning in mulch which had spread to a first floor, front porch. Part of the porch siding had to be removed to complete extinguishment of the fire. The second blaze was reported at 1:56 am on Monday morning at 11 Oakland Avenue. Firefighters extinguished a fire on a second floor porch that had spread into an exterior wall. Firefighters had to open up several walls to complete extinguishment. At 1106 pm on Tuesday night, November 5th, an electrical fire broke out on the third floor of 72 Line Street. Firefighters had to open a section of ceiling to extinguish the fire and electrical power had to be shut down for the apartment. A third porch fire broke out this morning, November 6th at 848 am at 99 Porter Street. The fire was confined to a second floor rear porch and exterior wall. Improper disposal of smoking materials is suspected as the cause of all three porch fires.

The Somerville Fire Department would like to remind residents to properly dispose of smoking materials outside of their homes. Porch and deck fires have increased as smokers move outside instead of smoking in their residences. A metal container with sand is the best way to dispose of cigarette butts. Never use a potted plant or a plastic or combustible container to dispose of your smoking materials. These potted plants often contain peat and dead plant material which are very combustible. Never toss cigarettes into mulch or other vegetation around your property. It is also recommended to keep mulch at least 18 inches away from the base of your home. Pea stone or crushed rock should instead be used up against the building.

SOMERVILLE – The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO)added the City of Somerville, MA to its affiliate member list last week, including Somerville in its prestigious list of just 18 member cities and 12 affiliate members nationwide that includes Boston, Denver, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., among others. In a press release, NACTO officials lauded Somerville for its “[commitment] to sustainable transportation initiatives, aiming to strengthen cities and improve quality of life through better street design and transportation policy.” Earlier this month, Somerville was also recognized by the League of American Cyclists with a Silver level Bicycle Friendly Community Award, recognizing a significant step up from Bronze in only two years. The City of Somerville received a 3.29 rate on its $13 million Municipal Purposes loan after Moody’s assigns City’s highest ever credit rating to borrowing

SOMERVILLE – Reaping the benefits of the City’s highest ever credit rating in the City’s history, the City of Somerville will now receive a low interest rate on its previously approved short-term 20-year Municipal Purposes loan. After Moody’s Investors Service reaffirmed the City’s Aa2 long-term rating earlier this year, the credit rating agency recently also assigned the City’s more than $13 million in short-term borrowing the same high credit rating. At noon on Friday, November 8, the City of Somerville will join the New England Patriots, Lowell Spinners baseball team, and 14 other Massachusetts municipalities in establishing a POW-MIA chair at City Hall. This chair will remind the public of the 42,000 American servicemembers who have taken as prisoners of war and the 83,000 servicemembers who have declared missing in action since World War II. The display will consist of a chair, American and POW-MIA flags, and a plaque.

The dedication ceremony will begin promptly at noon on the main floor of City Hall, opposite the City Clerk’s office. Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Alderman Jack Connolly, and Joseph D’Entremont of Operation Rolling Thunder are expected to speak. Operation Rolling Thunder is the organization of Vietnam veterans that originally proposed the idea of such displays. The public is invited to the ceremony.

agreed to serve as the Interim Acting Chief of Police beginning on
Dec. 1, 2013, until a permanent replacement is found for departing

2011 and previously held from 2005 to 2009. He served as Deputy

Two suspicious overnight car fire’s occurred on Bow Street Somerville overnight.

Investigators are not sure if they are connected to a string of suspicious fires which spread across the City of Somerville over the past few months

This story is still developing as the investigation continues……

On 11/1/2013, I, Officer Tim Van Nostrand, was on duty and assigned to uniform patrol in marked cruiser West 5. While monitoring traffic on Broadway, a public way in the city of Somerville, I queried Massachusetts registration on my laptop computer. The result of my RMV query showed the registered owner, .revoked license.

I activated my emergency lights and siren and stopped the vehicle in front of 855 Broadway. As soon as I stopped the vehicle, the front seat female passenger, and the rear seat male passenger attempted to exit the vehicle. I informed them to remain in the car, and informed Somerville Control of the stop.

I identified the operator as the registered owner, and informed him the reason why I had stopped him. While speaking with the operator both passengers continued to move around, and seemed very nervous. The Somerville Council on Aging and Teen Empowerment went to Symphony Hall November 1st as part of an ongoing collaboration together. This specific program was done through a grant with The Boston Symphony Orchestra. They chose the COA and Teen Empowerment to participate in its Symphony for Our City program, which includes three special concerts and some educational presentations about classical music. We also heard that anyone appliying to be interim chief until they find a replacement will not be allowed to apply to be the chief. We heard that the interim chief could even qualify to go as back possibly far as a lieutenant, but who knows,? Alway remember that this is Somerville and anything is possible! Let’s just hope the the mayor remains with an open mind and stays within the homegrown local box this time and picks a local talent from within the department!  We wish Former Somerville Police Chief Tom all the best and thank you for a job well done sir!

Staff and all lobbies at Winter Hill Bank were dressed in “Pink” to bring awareness and help fight Breast Cancer during the entire month of October.
Winter Hill Bank, its customers and staff raised monies during the month which will be donated to help fight breast cancer. All locations of the bank provided valuable handouts about early Breast Cancer detection and as a “Thank You” for a donation each customer received a token of appreciation. To date approximately $5,000.00 raised will go towards breast cancer research, education, advocacy, health services and social support programs.

Somerville Fire Fighters Union Endorses Matt McLaughlin in Ward 1 Alderman Race
East Somerville – October 24, 2013 – In a display of support for the candidate that has already earned widespread endorsements from labor unions and working families, the International Association of Firefighters Local 76, the union of Somerville Fire Fighters, endorsed Matt McLaughlin for Ward 1 Alderman at their meeting last night.
Matt is delighted to receive the endorsement of the Fire Fighters, saying, “Since the beginning of my campaign, I have been 100% committed to fighting for working families in Somerville. I am honored to have the support of an organization that has always worked for its’ members safety and welfare, just as they have protected our community.”
The Fire Fighters’ endorsement, coming just over two weeks after Mayor Joe Curtatone’s endorsement, cements Matt’s standing as an independent candidate who can constructively address complicated issues. The Mayor’s administration and the Fire Fighters’ union have been involved in contentious contract negotiations; having the support of both is a clear display that Matt is the candidate who will continue to create bridges once elected into office.
The Fire Fighters’ endorsement is the most recent endorsement in a string of other important shows of support from labor unions. Matt has received endorsements from twelve other unions and labor organizations representing workers in the public sector (including the Somerville Labor Coalition), the building trades, the service sector, and more. Further underscoring Matt’s broad appeal, Matt has also received the endorsements of current Ward 1 Alderman Maureen Bastardi, Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz, the Progressive Democrats of Somerville, and The Somerville Journal.
Matt is running for the Ward 1 Alderman seat, and is competing against local businessman Elio LoRusso. At the present time of this endorsement Elio LoRusso did not list any endorsements on his website.

House 155-0, approved the VALOR II Act, a bill that would expand financial and education benefits and many other services for veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families. Provisions include increasing the buffer zone of 500 feet to 1,000 feet for demonstrations at any military funeral; allowing college students who are called to active duty the option to complete their courses at a later date or withdraw and receive a refund of all tuition and fees; and allowing private-sector employers to give preference to veterans and spouses of 100 percent disabled veterans. This past Saturday, November 2nd marked the third anniversary that Somerville Police Officer Mario Oliveria was shot multiple times while serving an arrest warrant.

The incident took place on Gibbens Street in Somerville where Oliveria moments after the shooting lay cold on the ground fighting for his life until emergency medical first responder units arrived at the scene.

Oliveria said in a statement to The Somerville News Weekly that” If it weren’t for the heroics of ATF Agent Brian Higgins, Somerville Police Sergeant Joe Mccain, Somerville Police Lieutenant. Reardon and Somerville Police Detective Nadile that he would not have made it to the Massachusetts General Hospital where Dr. David King performed a miracle and brought him back from the dead, not once but Twice!” He also went on saying that” He could never repay those guys for what they did, never!” and that “He is forever indebted to them. ” also “Thank you to all my family and Facebook family for all the support, I mean that with all my heart!”

The Grand Opening of Somerville’s newest restaurant, “West 7 Bistro,” owned by Delio Susi took place this past Saturday afternoon.

The new bistro restaurant is located at 1137 broadway, Teele Square in Somerville.

Friends, relatives, patrons and elected officials were in attendance at the grand opening event to congratulate “West 7 Bistro’s owner on his new restaurant.

While they were there they also got to sample some of the restaurant’s finest cuisine creations from its new menu.

Former Somerville Mayor/ Middlesex County Register of Deeds Gene Brune had the honors of cutting the grand opening ribbon that officially made the opening official.

U.S. Congressman Michael Capuano, State Massachusetts State Representative Tim Toomey, Somerville Deputy Police Chief Michael Cabral and Somerville Alderman Dennis Sullivan as well as candidate for alderman-at-large, Mary Jo Rossetti stopped by to offer their congratulations and support as well. Our condolences go out to the family of Anne Joyce of Somerville who has sadly passed away this week from injuries that she sustained from a fall.

Anne was mother to former Somerville Ward 2 Alderman Kenny Joyce and widow to the late former Somerville Alderman-at-Large William “Billy” Joyce who went in to be the City Messenger for Somerville.

Anne was a wonderful lady very active within the city of Somerville and especially with the all her friends who gather at all the Somerville Council on Aging events.

She was very well-liked throughout the entire city and she will be sadly missed

We will keep you posted with Anne’s funeral service information as soon as we hear more.

The Owner of F.W. Russell Disposal, Charles Carneglia, received a check today for his settlement with the Teamsters Union, Local 25.

On June 21, 2013, a 12 person Jury in Suffolk County Superior Court found that Teamsters Union Local 25 is liable for damage caused to F.W. Russell & Sons Disposal, Inc., a Family owned waste removal company that services many local cities, towns and businesses. The events at issue in this case began on December 27, 2007 when Teamsters organized and executed mass picketing at Russell’s Somerville facilities. The Teamsters elected to engage in this “strike for recognition” instead of using the National Labor Relations Board’s typical procedure, which would have allowed Russell employees to vote on wheather or not they wanted Union representation. The Teamsters goal was to put pressure on the Owner of F W Russell Disposal to recognize the Union without their employees assent. On Friday afternoon Somerville police undercover drug units made an arrest across the street from the Holiday Inn directly in front of United Divers on Washington Street.

The suspect was placed into custody then transported to the Somerville station for booking.

Earlier this week we wrote a story titled “Somerville Company Burning The Midnight Oil Manufacturing 2013 World Series Championship Banner”

The banner was manufactured by Tony Lafuente and his company Flag Graphics thats located on Allston Street in Somerville MA.

After completion, the banner that was delivered actually on Thursday, a bit sooner then originally planed, then installed outside Fenway Park in Boston reflecting The 2013 World Series Championship Boston Red Sox as it is proudly displayed for the world to see!

On Friday morning Tony Lafuente and his entire staff of employees at Flag Graphics were busy again manufacturing yet another new banner.

This banner measured 30′ x 50′ in dimension and will be installed early Saturday morning and proudly displayed as well on the side way up high of the John Hancock Tower in Boston

This World Series Championship banner will be noticed by thousands of spectators as the procession of Boston Duck Tour Boats drive by the monstrous banner carrying the 2013 World Champion Red Sox team.

BOSTON — Senator Jehlen is pleased to announce a new initiative created by Attorney General Martha Coakley’s HomeCorps program and the Midas Collaborative to assist low and moderate income residents with financial stability and recovery.

This new initiative is the result of Attorney General Martha Coakley’s HomeCorps Crisis Response Innovation Grants, supported by funding from the nationwide settlement involving the nation’s five largest mortgage servicers and their connection with unlawful foreclosures and loan servicing.

With the rollout of the financial coaching services, Senator Jehlen stated, “I’m really pleased that Attorney General Coakley and the Midas Collaborative have provided this important new service for financially unstable residents across the Commonwealth. I hope that these families take advantage of this new program, as the holiday season approaches.”AG Coakley’s HomeCorps program supports a wide variety of foreclosure prevention and mitigation services across the Commonwealth including loan modification assistance, free direct legal representation to distressed borrowers and post foreclosure stabilization assistance to families.

Using the grant funding, Midas will host the Financial Confidence Campaign, a multiplatform, statewide effort to distribute critical financial information and individual assistance.

Services include –
· MassSaves.org: An interactive website with credible, consumer-benefitting financial education information and tools. Resources are both general and Massachusetts-specific.
