Lyric’s Champs Wraps Up 4th Successful Season

“Blades” the Boston Bruins mascot was in the house again as Lyric’s Champs Skating Club wrapped up our fourth skating season!

Lyric’s Champs Skating Club is a learn-to-skate program offered 100% free of charge and designed specifically for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. Lyric’s Champs provides one-on-one skating instruction in a sensory friendly environment.

Sunday marked the end of our five week program and put a wrap on our fourth successful season for Lyric’s Champs. This Sunday, Lyric’s Champs will be the special guests of the Providence Bruins, where we will skate on their ice for one last time this season and then stick around to cheer them on for their final home game of the regular season.

There’s a lot that goes in to getting this yearly program off the ground and a lot of people come together to make it happen. We began four seasons ago with ten skaters and throughout the years we’ve grown to 25 skaters, 30 volunteers and coaches, and a waiting list.

We at Lyric’s Champs would like to thank all the good people who help us throughout the year with donations and fundraising efforts, which allows us to keep the program free of charge. A big thank you to the rink staff, especially John “Mr. Recreation” Curley and Stevie “The Tin-Man” Burlmachi. Huge thank you to Albie “Blades” Pellecchia for taking time away from his beautiful brand new baby girl to come skate with us and pose for a million pictures with our skaters and their families. Finally, a very special thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all of our volunteers who sacrifice their Sunday each week for five weeks. Without you, none of this would be possible. You come week in and week out, sometimes leaving your own children at home to come skate with ours and it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. Our skater’s parents have given you all glowing reviews! Thank you once again for a job well done!

Every year we call on our community for help and every year we’re blown away by the kindness, generosity, and support we receive. It’s a yearly reminder of what makes Somerville the great community that it is.

This year was a big year for Lyric’s Champs. Our skating club grew in size again, our number of volunteers increased, we established a scholarship for a graduating Somerville High School senior, and contributed to many fundraising efforts. Most importantly, we gained 501c3 charity status which has opened a world of opportunities for us and we are beyond excited to see what the future holds for Lyric’s Champs!

See You Next Season!
