“America’s Night Out Against Crime” featured Fire and Police demonstrations, children’s activities and games, and more.
This past Tuesday night, the City of Somerville along with Somerville Cares About Prevention (SCAP) in partnership with the Somerville Police Department, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, and the Somerville Office of Prevention (SOP) hosted the 13th annual National Night Out Against Crime and Drugs.
Somerville’s celebration of National Night Out took place at Foss Park. The event included Fire and Police Department demonstrations, a presentation from the Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit, live performances by the Somerville Sunsetters, Mission Church of Christ, Teen Empowerment, and the Red Tiger Academy of Martial Arts, youth activities and games, raffle prizes, and information tables from over 30 neighborhood agencies.
“The Somerville Police Department looks forward to National Night Out every year and views this great event as another opportunity to work collaboratively with the community and engage with the community we are so honored to serve,” said Somerville Police Chief David Fallon.
This year’s event had a special focus on prevention of prescription misuse and overdose prevention. As part of the event, the Somerville Police were accepting unused or unwanted prescription medications.
Residents were urged to please clean out their medicine cabinets and drop off any unused prescriptions at the Police Table near the fire engines at the event.
“This event was a great way for youth and residents to take a stand against crime and drugs and show that Somerville is a safe community to live, work, play, and raise a family,” said SOP Director Cory Mashburn. “The support from the City of Somerville, Target Inc., Somerville Police and Fire Departments, the Somerville Health and Human Service Department, Cataldo Ambulance Service, and local agencies and businesses allow for SCAP to organize an event that unites and strengthens the community.”
