Local Vets Get Honored on Somerville WHYC 2014 Veterans Cruise

By William Tauro

This past Sunday, the Winter Hill Yacht Club of Somerville and the Chelsea Rotary Club hosted their Annual Veterans Cruise.

Over one hundred-fifty disabled and retired veterans, some arriving by chartered buses and in wheelchairs from all across the state were the invited quests of honor for the day.

The vets got to be passengers on twenty five donated boats piloted by their private captains that cruised the Boston Harbor for a memorable day on the water starting out from Somerville Harbor.

Before the sea trip began, the local veterans enjoyed a delicious home cooked breakfast prepared by volunteer members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club.

The veteran’s flotilla then departed via the Emilia Airhart Dam lockes onto the Boston Harbor under escort by Massachusetts State Police Marine Division Trooper Dave Toomey and by Envirolmentle Marine Police Officer Jason Armstrong in their state of the art issued police boats.

The flotilla then proceeded to pass under the Tobin Bridge with a course directly set to the USS Constitution for a pass by salute of the crew then onto Castle Island through the harbor.

Once at Castle Island the flotilla met up with the Boston Fire Department’s fire boat that displayed a ceremonial salute to the vets with a fantastic water spray through a series of high powered pumps built into the ship’s massive hull.

From there the veterans headed back to the Winter Hill Yacht Club for an old fashion barbecue dinner that was generously provided by the members of the Yacth Club and Oliveiras Steak House of Somerville.

Special thanks goes out to the Members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club, Cindy Hickey and the Somerville Council on Aging, Oliverias Brazilian Steak House, Chealsea Rotary Club, Marriott Residence Inn of Chelsea, members of Mystic Wellington Yacht Club, Paul Revere Bus Co. Kane’s Donut of Saugus, US Army Major Paul Judge, US Army Specialist Virginia Hussy, NH State Representative/Ret Marine Sgt Al Baldasaro, Bedford VA, Chelsea Soldiers Home, Somerville Veterans Councle, Chelsea Veterans Councle, Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts Envirolmentle Police, Boston Fire Department Boat crew and Somerville Community Police officer Maryann Manfra for making this years cruise to honor our veterans possible.
