Neighbors abutting 24-44 Broadway are up in arms over a proposed development that they believe is sneaking past through the cracks with political motivated involvement and that the developers are ignoring the neighborhood’s concerns. The project is said to take up the entire block from the former Boulter Plywood building to the Taco Loco Mexican Restaurant. MASSACHUSETTS TO MANDATE MASKS

Reps. Jon Santiago (D-Boston), Mindy Domb (D-Amherst) and Christina Minicucci (D-North Andover) filed a bill last week that would require every person in Massachusetts to wear a face covering when in any indoor or outdoor public setting, including any building open to the public, elevators, hospitals, doctor’s and dentist’s office; while using public transportation, any taxi or ride-sharing vehicles; at outdoors public spaces including public parks, streets, sidewalks or recreation areas when a distance of at least six feet cannot be maintained by any non-household member. “MORE TO THE STORY” MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGN

The state has launched a campaign designed to encourage people to have conversations with family and friends who may have mental health problems. The campaign aims to help people look beyond a person’s answers like “I’m fine” to recognize the signs that someone may be struggling with mental health issues and to offer support. REPLACE COLUMBUS DAY WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLE’S DAY

A bill that would replace the current state holiday of Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day has not seen any action in the House since it had a public hearing more than 17 months ago on April 30, 2019. The holiday would acknowledge the history of genocide and discrimination against Indigenous people and recognize and celebrate their thriving cultures and continued resistance. Medford/Somerville-Tufts University to provide free COVID-19 testing for abutters

Up to 300 asymptomatic tests per week will be available to immediate neighbors in Medford and Somerville, starting October 13

MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (Oct. 6, 2020; Updated Oct. 9, 2020)—Tufts University is launching a free COVID-19 community testing program for neighbors in Medford and Somerville who live on select streets close to the university’s Medford/Somerville campus. A limited number of asymptomatic tests will be available each week during the program, which launches Tuesday, Oct. 13 and concludes at the end of Tufts’ Fall semester in December.
