Our condolences go out to the family of Anne Joyce of Somerville who has sadly passed away this week from injuries that she sustained from a fall.

Anne was mother to former Somerville Ward 2 Alderman Kenny Joyce and widow to the late former Somerville Alderman-at-Large William “Billy” Joyce who went in to be the City Messenger for Somerville.

Anne was a wonderful lady very active within the city of Somerville and especially with the all her friends who gather at all the Somerville Council on Aging events.

She was very well-liked throughout the entire city and she will be sadly missed

We will keep you posted with Anne’s funeral service information as soon as we hear more.

The Owner of F.W. Russell Disposal, Charles Carneglia, received a check today for his settlement with the Teamsters Union, Local 25.

On June 21, 2013, a 12 person Jury in Suffolk County Superior Court found that Teamsters Union Local 25 is liable for damage caused to F.W. Russell & Sons Disposal, Inc., a Family owned waste removal company that services many local cities, towns and businesses. The events at issue in this case began on December 27, 2007 when Teamsters organized and executed mass picketing at Russell’s Somerville facilities. The Teamsters elected to engage in this “strike for recognition” instead of using the National Labor Relations Board’s typical procedure, which would have allowed Russell employees to vote on wheather or not they wanted Union representation. The Teamsters goal was to put pressure on the Owner of F W Russell Disposal to recognize the Union without their employees assent. On Friday afternoon Somerville police undercover drug units made an arrest across the street from the Holiday Inn directly in front of United Divers on Washington Street.

The suspect was placed into custody then transported to the Somerville station for booking.

Earlier this week we wrote a story titled “Somerville Company Burning The Midnight Oil Manufacturing 2013 World Series Championship Banner”

The banner was manufactured by Tony Lafuente and his company Flag Graphics thats located on Allston Street in Somerville MA.

After completion, the banner that was delivered actually on Thursday, a bit sooner then originally planed, then installed outside Fenway Park in Boston reflecting The 2013 World Series Championship Boston Red Sox as it is proudly displayed for the world to see!

On Friday morning Tony Lafuente and his entire staff of employees at Flag Graphics were busy again manufacturing yet another new banner.

This banner measured 30′ x 50′ in dimension and will be installed early Saturday morning and proudly displayed as well on the side way up high of the John Hancock Tower in Boston

This World Series Championship banner will be noticed by thousands of spectators as the procession of Boston Duck Tour Boats drive by the monstrous banner carrying the 2013 World Champion Red Sox team.

BOSTON — Senator Jehlen is pleased to announce a new initiative created by Attorney General Martha Coakley’s HomeCorps program and the Midas Collaborative to assist low and moderate income residents with financial stability and recovery.

This new initiative is the result of Attorney General Martha Coakley’s HomeCorps Crisis Response Innovation Grants, supported by funding from the nationwide settlement involving the nation’s five largest mortgage servicers and their connection with unlawful foreclosures and loan servicing.

With the rollout of the financial coaching services, Senator Jehlen stated, “I’m really pleased that Attorney General Coakley and the Midas Collaborative have provided this important new service for financially unstable residents across the Commonwealth. I hope that these families take advantage of this new program, as the holiday season approaches.”AG Coakley’s HomeCorps program supports a wide variety of foreclosure prevention and mitigation services across the Commonwealth including loan modification assistance, free direct legal representation to distressed borrowers and post foreclosure stabilization assistance to families.

Using the grant funding, Midas will host the Financial Confidence Campaign, a multiplatform, statewide effort to distribute critical financial information and individual assistance.

Services include –
· MassSaves.org: An interactive website with credible, consumer-benefitting financial education information and tools. Resources are both general and Massachusetts-specific.

Luana Schneider and Guest speaker, Staff Sergeant George “Chris” Campbell, a disabled/wounded veteran, presented a touching multi-media presentation and discussion. Many Older Veterans were able to relate to the stories shared that day as well as share their own thoughts, stories and reflections about their service. It was a great time had by all and special opportunity for healing the wounds, united together.

He is also brother to one of our good friends and famous Facebook personality, Dan Cafferty!

Both gentlemen are two good guys and we wish them all the best! Go Sox!

Many happy birthdays happing in and around the Ville this week! First we have to start off with Mama Emily Tauro who will celebrate her 91st birthday this coming week! At 91 she still knows the difference between Santarpio’s pizza and other pizza makers out there! There sure is no fooling her! Another Somerville Mama that is celebrating her birthday this week is Mama Maria Curtatone. Yes, that’s right Mayor Joe’s, Brother Cosmo’s and Register of Deeds Maria’s Curtatone’s mom and you sure know that old saying when you walk into their home ” Mangia, now that’s Italian!” Another well known Ville mama is celibrating her birthday this week and happy birthday greetings goes out to “Helena Lafuente!” Helena is wife to our Ward 4 Alderman Tony Lafuente who also made the Somerville News Weekly’s “Favorite Photo of the day on page 12 when you get a chance to flip the pages. A happy 80th birthday goes out to our good friend Ron Glejzer who has been partying all week we heard celebrating the magic day! We wish all of our birthday boys and girls the all very best for a lifetime of happiness for many years to come!

Get well soon greetings go out to our good friend Ann Joyce, mother of former Ward 2 Alderman Kenny Joyce who took a nasty fay last Friday and ended up in the emergency room for a few days! Ann is also one of our most avid readers and more important she’s a good friend. We hear that Ann is beginning to show signs of recovery from her injury’s and should be home on the mend very soon. And we wish Ann all the best for a speedy recovery.

The City of Somerville held it’s wall breaking ceremony on this past Monday at the old incinerator and former transfer station on Linwood Street.
“We may be gathering to mark the tearing down of the transfer station, but we are celebrating the building of a new future for Brickbottom and InnerBelt,” said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone. “In creating SomerVision, the city’s 20-Year Comprehensive Plan, community members designated Brickbottom/InnerBelt as a transformative area targeted for mixed-use, transit-oriented redevelopment that will provide an economic engine for our city. And with the transfer station coming down, the Green Line Extensioncoming in, and the grounding of McGrath under review, we are well on our way. Reclaiming this once and future thriving neighborhood will help us reach our shared SomerVision goals of creating 30,000 new jobs, new and affordable housing, and new commercial tax revenues to fund our services and schools.”

​This Saturday October 26, the Saint Clement Anchormen faced their final step in their journey to the playoffs by defeating the Marian Mustangs 41-6, capturing the Catholic Central League Small League Champions. The first quarter started with Saint Clement gaining the first lead off a touchdown by RB Deron Hines (Chelsea). Although this would be Hines’ only TD for the game, he would continue being the glue guy by gaining enormous running yards and playing stellar defense for the squad. With about 4 minutes remaining in the quarter, LB Marcus Carvalho (Chelsea) would get an interception. This led to another touchdown for the Anchormen, this time scored by RB Branden Williams. The quarter would end with SC leading 14-0.

The second quarter started with another interception for the Anchormen, this time by CB Macallen Marcelin (Medford), showing off their much improved defense compared to the beginning of the season. This led to another touchdown by WR Junior Oyaronbi (Malden)from a long pass from QB Mike Sullivan (Everett). Although he is rarely mentioned here, Sullivan has done the team extremely well by setting up a lot of the touchdowns that the various Anchormen receivers score. Although the Mustangs would get an interception of their own halfway through the quarter, they were unable to make anything out of it, leaving the score at the half with the Anchormen leading 21-0.

Saint Clement could not rest for long as the 3rd quarter kicked into gear. Williams would get yet another touchdown this quarter, extending the Anchormen lead to 28. Not long after, a fumble recovery would lead SC to yet another touchdown, this one being Oyaronbi’s second of the night as well. There was another fumble recovery on SC’s part later in the game. This was shortly followed by yet another touchdown, this time by RB Casey Baptiste (Medford). The quarter ended 41-0 Anchormen, with the Mustangs looking all but beaten.

The fourth quarter is where the Anchormen decided to put in their Junior Varsity squad. This would eventually lead to a single touchdown for Marian, but this would be mostly inconsequential to the game overall.

The message ringing through the entire team after the game was echoed by Coach Walsh; “It’s been a long time coming.” Saint Clement was not only in the playoffs for the first time after a long drought, but they were the champions of their league. The playoffs won’t be easy, but the Anchormen looked focused and hardened through the regular season. Their first playoff game will be this Saturday November 2nd vs Chelsea High School at 7 pm at Dilboy Stadium. Please come out and show your anchors some support.

The 2013 recipient of the John W. Fitzgerald Lifetime Achievement Award – named for the founder of Ames Safety Envelope Company, now Ames Business Park, and the first Chair of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce – will be Thomas Bent of Bent Electrical Contractors. The award will be presented at the Chamber’s 67^th Annual Dinner on Wednesday, November 6, at the Holiday Inn.

Tom Bent was chair of the Chamber’s Board of Directors from 1990 to 1997.  He has served as the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee Chair since 1998.  In addition to his central leadership roles in shaping and guiding the 21^st Century Chamber, he has served as Mayor Joseph Curtatone’s representative to the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) since 2007.  During his tenure as MPO representative he has been instrumental in bringing to Somerville the: Assembly Square Orange Line transit station; Green Line extension; I-93 Fast 14 bridge replacement project; and the streetscape projects in Magoun Square, East Somerville, and Somerville Avenue.  Continue reading Tom Bent to receive Lifetime Achievement Award, MassChallenge founder John Harthorne to keynote Chamber of Commerce Dinner →

I remember the day the roof collapsed at Russ’ Donuts. As a child my brothers and I would go there from Lexington Park and get fresh donuts that would put Krispy Kreme to shame. When the roof collapsed, the business was forced to close. Soon after, condos appeared.
The trend in my neighborhood at the time was that any vacant space was gobbled up and used for new apartments.

With this development, the identity of the neighborhood changed. Many people I grew up with moved away, either by choice or because they could no longer afford to stay. Those who remain can only remember the neighborhood that once existed. The most frustrating aspect of this transformation was that the community had no say in how it was being shaped.
Today, East Somerville is experiencing a similar wave of development. Unlike when I was younger, I am now in a position to influence the future of my community. The most important thing I will do as Ward 1 alderman is to listen to my constituents and represent their hopes and aspirations for the community. This past Saturday Oct. 26th the City of Somerville officially dedicated it’s new ice rick as the Founders Rink at a special event.

The new ice rink was opened in 2012, two years after the City took control of the Veterans Memorial Rink.

The City of Somerville also honored five veterans – George Hughes (Army), John Doncaster (Army), Raymond Deeran (Navy), James Papaluca (Marine) and Joseph Guidi (Navy) – who founded the Somerville Youth Hockey Association in the 1960’s. Now that it’s officially dedicated, the five men’s names now appear on a plaque at the new ice rink at 570 Somerville Ave., next to the Veterans Memorial Rink.

The Boston Derby Dames Just about call Somerville home because the team is in Somerville just about every day practicing in the second floor of their practice facility roller rink right here the City of Somerville.

Boston’s premier Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association (WFTDA) roller derby league. Skating since 2005, being awesome since forever.

They train in Somerville, MA; they play at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, MA.

About the Dames
They are Boston’s first and only all-female, DIY, skater-owned-and-operated flat track roller derby league and proud members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

The Boston Derby Dames have been skating their hearts out since May 2005 when the first intrepid rollergirls began training at both roller and hockey rinks throughout greater Boston.

The league now boasts more than 70 active skaters on four home teams: the Arkham Horrors, Cosmonaughties, Nutcrackers, and Wicked Pissahs.

Their all-star travel team, the Boston Massacre, has been in action since October 2005 and has traveled to play teams in Las Vegas, Columbus, Madison, and Seattle to name a few.

They’ve hosted Charm City (MD), Atlanta, Gotham (NYC), Cincinnati, Dominion (VA), Kansas, and more.

They are honored to have been WFTDA’s July 2011 Featured League!

Where They Play
Their home base is just north of Boston at Shriners Auditorium (located at 99 Fordham Road, Wilmington in MA.

On February 9th, 2008, they broke all previous attendance records when they hosted more than 1,600 fans at a bout between the Cosmonaughties and the Wicked Pissahs.

And with roller derby changing and growing exponentially with each season, their fan base has only continued to expand.

Renovation of Davis Square park will create a more active, community-focused park based on public feedback

SOMERVILLE – The City of Somerville held a groundbreaking ceremony at Kenney Park on Friday, Oct. 25th as work commences on overhauling the park and creating a more active, community-focused space for residents.

After two public meetings culminating in a design focused on creativity, the Board of Aldermen approved Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone’s request for an appropriation of $500,000 for the project. All are invited to celebrate as the City breaks ground Friday on the renovation, which will update and improve the park’s play structures, surfaces and plaza while introducing inventive new elements. Somerville’s Assembly Square/ Federal Realty Development area is coming together very quickly and turning into a real place of beauty and becoming a huge asset for the City of Somerville.

With the finished product only months away, soon crowds will be flocking to the area to visit the many retail shops, restaurants and outlets that Assembly Square will have to offer!

Management of the Walnut Street Center showed their appreciation to its “Gala Event Committee” board members by treating them to a luncheon at the Charles River Golf Course in Newton on Friday.

The Gala Committee that is chaired and spearheaded by Former Somerville Mayor Gene Brune and Somerville Alderman-at-Large Jack Connolly helped raise over $35,000 for the Walnut Street Center with this year’s Gala back in September.

The event was held at the Somerville Holiday Inn with over two hundred attendees.

Walnut Street Center is a nonprofit, human service agency located in Somerville, Arlington and Cambridge, MA that provides residential, day and individual/family support services to over 200 adults with developmental disabilities. Walnut Street Center was started in 1970 by a group of parents that wanted to provide a better way of life for their children and other persons with developmental disabilities.

Walnut Street Center’s mission is to empower adults who have developmental disabilities to make meaningful life choices.

The City of Somerville has purchased a brand-new tower-truck for it’s fire department.

The truck is state-of-the-art and has all the modern safety features to help firefighters battle fires and keeping them safe.

This past Thursday October 24th, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Board of Aldermen promoted three Somerville Police Officers .

The ceremony took place in the alderman’s chambers at city hall.

Sergeant Timothy Mitsakis was promoted to Lieutenant, Officer John Tam (K9 Unit) was promoted to Sergeant, and Officer Martha Costa was also promoted to Sergeant.

All three officers have had outstanding careers with the City of Somerville and the Police Department.

When’s the last time you used a phone booth? As pay phones become less and less common the booths the housed them have ­­­been left behind in many cities. Not wanting to waste an opportunity to display art, the Somerville Arts Council and the Nave Gallery teamed up to recruit artists who transformed abandoned phone booths into public art. This Sunday, we’re celebrating the opening The Phone Art Box Project, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a tour of the first five completed phone art boxes. Follow Mayor Curtatone from box to box for mini-openings with refreshments at each box, or visit any box during the two-hour event at your leisure.

BOSTON – Senator Jehlen announced today that the Senate voted to pass S865 An Act relative to parental leave. Senator Jehlen is the lead sponsor of this legislation, which protects employees and modernizes the legal concepts of parental leave.
“I am proud of the hard work of all of those involved in getting this legislation passed, which provides important protections for parents of both genders so that they may focus on establishing a life for their new child,” said Senator Jehlen. “The legislation protects both employees and employers through gender neutrality and transparency in job protection.”
An act relative to parental leave updates Massachusetts’ parental leave laws to reflect the evolution and current needs of modern families. The bill makes the parental leave law gender neutral, allowing for the parental leave statute to be available for both men and women. Employers who do not provide comparable leave to fathers may be violating constitutional rights to equal protection under the law. The legislation not only protects parents, but also protects employers because it remedies the current, unconstitutional nature of the law that risks violating the principle of equal protection.
Additionally, An act relative to parental leave requires employers to inform employees in writing prior to their parental leave, or at the time of making a request, if taking leave beyond 8 weeks would eliminate their right to return to work. Present law provides up to eight weeks of job-protected, unpaid parental leave. However, in some cases, employers verbally grant a worker more than eight weeks, even though the additional weeks are not job-protected. In one prominent case decided by the Supreme Judicial Court, Global NAPs, Inc. v. Awiszus, 457 Mass. 489 (2010), an employer granted a mother ten weeks of maternity leave, only to fire her after she came back to work because she was only legally protected for eight of those weeks. This kind of misleading and unfair treatment would be outlawed by the new legislation.

Tufts University will pay the City of Somerville more than $1.3 million over five years, waive application fee for Somerville High School students

A car fire occurred in front of the Somerville Department of Public Works on Franny Road directly in front of its gate on Friday afternoon at about 1:30 PM.
The Somerville Fire Department rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze.
No injuries were reported.

Somerville Fire Department Lt.Tom Tierney’s young daughter, Emma was just diagnosed with Leukemia. Lt. Steve Belski has put this site together for anyone that might want to help in any way that they can, to try to help ease some of the burden off this family’s shoulder, while they are going through this very difficult time.

The beautiful little 7 year old girl in this picture is Emma. She was diagnosed last Thursday with Leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment for the next 6 weeks at Children’s Hospital. Tony Lafuente’s Flag Graphics of Somerville had the honor to design, manufacture and hang up this magical banner at Fenway Park over the weekend!

Flag Graphics located on Allston Street in Somerville designs and manufactures most of all the major banners for all the major sporting events in Boston.

We have received several complaints recently from Somerville residents and businesses concerning a specific phone scam. A caller from a ‘617’ area code phone number is randomly calling our residents and stating that a family member was in an accident or being held hostage and demands money. In all cases it was a scam. When the police have called the number back, a recorded message states the voicemail is not set up and then it disconnects the call. If anyone receives a call such as this, please report it to the Somerville Police by calling 617-625-1212.
