Meshell Ndegeocello’s New Album,
No More Water, Just Released!
We can’t wait for next month! Grammy-winning musician Meshell Ndegeocello will grace Arts at the Armory’s Spotlight Series and Performance Hall on Friday, September 20th.
Ndegeocello just released her highly anticipated album, No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin, on August 2nd in honor of what would have been the revered writer’s 100th birthday.
Blue Note Records lauds Ndegeocello’s new release as a “prophetic musical odyssey.” This project, almost 10 years in the making, explores Baldwin’s work and draws inspiration from his seminal nonfiction piece, The Fire Next Time. The new album features contributions from Ndegeocello’s frequent collaborators, including guitarist Chris Bruce and vocalist Justin Hicks, as well as spoken word by poet Staceyann Chin and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hilton Als.
The New York Times published an article about Ndegeocello’s body of work on August 1st. “Meshell Ndegeocello Could Have Had Stardom but Chose Music Instead” by Wesley Morris.
The local opener for Ndegeocello’s concert will be pianist, composer, and Berklee professor Zahili Zamora! Born in Manzanillo, Cuba, Zamora began her musical journey at six years old and earned a performance degree from the National School of Music. Her passion and curiosity for music has taken her to Canada, South East Asia, and the United States. Zamora received funding from The Boston Foundation in 2018 to release an album with her Afro-Cuban jazz trio, MIXCLA. The self-titled debut album earned her two nominations from the Boston Music Awards.
We are thrilled to welcome audiences to experience Meshell Ndegeocello live on Friday, September 20th with her band. Doors open at 7:00pm, the concert will start at 8:00pm with Zamora to open!
