Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Jamal ESCOBAR (Billerica Warrant, Resisting Arrest)

On the above date and time, while assigned to the Gang Unit, Sgt. Capasso, Det. Cicerone and I observed Jamal Escobar and XXXXX in the area of 93 Glen St. Both young men are very well known to the Somerville Police as we are to them. The day prior, Sgt. Capasso and I spoke with XXXXX and offered him services with the Roca organization in Chelsea. We believed there was a warrant for Mr. Escobar. A WMS check confirmed there was an active warrant for Mr. Escobar.

As soon as they observed us they immediately reversed direction and turned left onto Pearl St. They turned left onto Rush St. and ran into a backyard. They were in backyards between Flint St. and Rush St. Units were advised of our location and the person we were attempting to locate.

Detective Cicerone observed them in a backyard between Rush St. and Cross St. He identified himself as a police officer ordered Mr. Escobar to stop. He refused to stop and they both fled through a backyard onto Cross St. They ran across Cross St. onto Randolph Place. As they ran down the street, they attempted to gain access to a backyard that would have provided them access to Pearl Street. Due to the gate having a dead bolt, they were unable to open the lock. Sgt. Capasso exited his cruiser, identified himself as “Police,” and told Mr. Escobar that “Stop running, you’re under arrest.” Mr. Escobar ignored Sgt. Capasso’s verbal order and ran into the alley to the left of the locked gate. Sgt. Capasso gave chase down the alley onto Pearl Street, as I was running down Cross Street towards Randolph Place.

As I got to Randolph Place, Mr. Escobar exited the alley with Sgt. Capasso close behind. Mr. Escobar clipped the left side of his body off a parked car as he cleared the sidewalk and began running west on Pearl Street. In the area of 150 Pearl Street, Sgt. Capasso was able to take Mr. Escobar to the ground, and the two of us forced his hands from his sides onto the rear of his body. Officer McGlaughlin arrived and placed Mr. Escobar into handcuffs.

Sgt. Capasso and I assisted Mr. Escobar from the street, sat him onto the sidewalk and explained why he was under arrest. Mr. Escobar will be charged with Resisting Arrest and on the Default Warrant for Threat To Commit A Crime.

Respectfully Submitted,

Det. J. Slattery Jr.
