Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Melvin KNIGHT (Shoplifting, Intimidate Witness) at Twin City Plaza

On Sunday, July 31, 2016, at 4:30 P.M., I was dispatched along with Officer Ubeda to Star Market located at 14 McGrath Hwy for a shoplifter.

While en route to Star Market, Somerville Police Control updated responding units that the suspect had left the store and was standing outside Sally’s Beauty Supply shop. The suspect was described as a black male, wearing a black tank top and shorts.

Upon arrival, Officer Ubeda located a black male wearing a black tank top and tan colored shorts standing outside Sally’s. While Officer Ubeda was explaining to the defendant the reason he was being stopped, the reporting party / witness, XXXXX approached me and told me “That’s the guy.”

I asked the defendant to state his name and social security number and he replied “Jay Wilson” and refused to provide his date of birth. I conducted a query using the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) database and found no match for the name and social security provided by the defendant.

Officer Ubeda recovered the following items from the defendant’s bag: one bag of scallops, one bag of shrimps, and two pounds of haddock. All three items had Star Market price tags on them.

I asked the defendant if had a receipt for the items found in his possession, and he was unable to provide one. At this time, I placed the defendant under arrest for shoplifting by concealing.

While waiting for the prisoner’s transport, the defendant began yelling, stating “Really, really, you gonna lock me up for food, no wonder you cops are getting killed. I’ll be out on a 20 dollars bond.”

The defendant was transported to the Somerville Police Headquarters via unit 200 operated by Officer Fusco. The defendant refused to comply with the booking process.

I obtained a receipt for the stolen items from Star Market totaling $47.87. I spoke with the store Manager, YYYYY, who requested that the defendant be trespassed from the store. I also spoke with XXXXX who stated that the defendant came into the beer and wine shop, and asked for a plastic bag. When XXXXX refused to give the defendant a plastic bag, the defendant purchased a beer bottle then placed the three bags of seafood inside another bag. He then told XXXXX “If you call the police, I’ll come back to see you.”

In addition to shoplifting by concealing, the defendant was charged with intimidation of a witness.

XXXXX also requested the defendant be trespassed from the wine and beer shop, an independent business located inside Star Market. Officer Goulart informed the defendant that he was trespassed from Star Market and Distinct Beer and Wine.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Samir Messaoudi #312
