Somerville to host two drop-off sites for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

SOMERVILLE— Keeping unused or expired medications at home can be unsafe for children, pets, and adults.

Whether accidental poisoning or intentional misuse, you can prevent these potential harms by safely disposing of prescription drugs you no longer need. To provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, Somerville is hosting two staffed drop-off events for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Saturday, October 25, Mayor Ballantyne invites Somerville residents to participate by stopping at the drop-off locations. City staff will be onsite at both locations to collect medications as well as provide overdose prevention information and resources. Each location will distribute free Narcan and fentanyl test strips for any residents interested.

Both locations will be staffed 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

Public Safety Headquarters at 220 Washington Street
Teele Square Fire Station at 6 Newbury St.

The event is hosted in partnership by the City of Somerville’s Community, Help, Outreach, and Recovery (COHR) unit of Somerville Police Department and the Somerville Prevention Services division of Health and Human Services.

For bottled medications, residents should remove or scratch out any personal information while leaving the name of the medication visible before disposing. Please make sure caps to liquid medications are secure.

Year-round drop-off location:
In addition to this event, Somerville offers 24/7, year-round disposal at the Somerville Public Safety Building (220 Washington Street) in addition to a sharps disposal kiosk.
