Outdoor Seating: The old saying “Cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face” definitely applies here!

Somerville parking spots are very scarce and hard to find especially on Broadway. Some restaurant owners like this one on Broadway is it’s own worst enemy where apparently the owner lacks the use of common sense and she is killing her own business.

—Gov. Healey on President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants/undocumented immigrants by declaring a national emergency.

Bureaucracy on Broadway: Woody’s Liquors’ Uphill Battle

Existing Building: The former Winter Hill Laundromat at 483 Broadway, Somerville, MA, which has remained vacant and neglected since a fire destroyed it nearly a decade ago.

Proposed Building Design: Architect Tavis Babbitt’s rendering of the proposed new building for Woody’s Liquors at 483 Broadway, a modern and revitalized structure that aims to replace the long-abandoned laundromat.

By Sasha Wood

November 13th, 2024

In a city that praises small businesses as the backbone of the community, the reality for John Wood, a business owner of 35 years, tells a different story. For nearly three years, he has faced relentless regulatory obstacles in his effort to relocate his liquor store from 523 Broadway to 483 Broadway, on the border of Somerville and Medford. The building at 483 Broadway, once the Winter Hill Laundromat, has sat vacant for almost a decade after a fire. Wood envisions transforming this abandoned property into a modern, welcoming store, but his journey has been anything but straightforward. What should have been a routine relocation has become a lesson in how local bureaucracy can derail even the best-laid plans. His story reflects struggles that many in the community understand all too well: trying to improve the neighborhood while battling a system that often seems indifferent to those it’s supposed to support. The interesting thing about this marvelous CD package is that you see the contributing artists in a different light. Billie Joe Royal, resplendent in “Down in the Boondocks” guitar riffs here imitates Dylan’s voice in “These Are Not My People,” https://youtu.be/Xm-kjyTrosc introducing listeners to non-hit songs that they may not have heard before. As Medford Turns:This Is The Place and These are The People

By Sharon Deyeso

The words so remind me of the message movie, back appx 30 years, The Point. The young boy was a bit different cause everyone in town had a Point on their head ( and thought they mentally had one) but him, adorable Oblio. More than ALL in life who are asked “Get the point?,” “Do you get it?”. He became unique, bullied, but emerged! It is OK to speak up…if you do, your are not odd or weird, but rather common sense with a Voice. I see the men and women who crafted a dynamic paper. “We are asking for the ability to form a committee to start a captive insurance plan or start a plan that would allow us to get assistance to fix these foundations. We are mirroring a plan that’s already in place and working in the state of Connecticut. They’ve replaced over 1,000 homes. They use a $1 a month surcharge on homeowners’ policies, no more than $12 a year.
