FRANCIS’ OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran
Mr. Francis P. “Frank” Kelly passed away on Wednesday, November 24th, he was 89. Born and raised in Cambridge, Frank was the son of the late Mary A. (Kenney) and William F. Kelley. A decorated veteran, he enlisted in the Army before high school and served on the ground in Korea, wounded in battle he was awarded two bronze service stars and the Purple Heart.
Frank was appointed to the Somerville Fire Department in 1958 and rose through the ranks. With the help of his family, he was able to study hard for the promotional exams and eventually became Deputy Chief of the Department. He retired in 1992 after 34 years of service to the city.
The beloved husband of 68 years to Joyce E. “Ginger” (Crowley) Kelly, together they raised their family in Somerville. He was the devoted father of Pat Kelly and her husband Joseph Kelly of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Fran Daly of Somerville and Bill Kelly and his wife Sue of Wilmington, Delaware. Cherished grandfather of Steven, Kelly Ann, Michael, Jay and Kevin and great-grandfather of Liam, Sam, Maren and Sloane. Dear brother of the late Joe, William, John, Mary, Anna and Theresa. Frank is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling Hours will be held in the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powder House Sq.) Somerville on Wednesday, December 1st from 10:00AM – 12:00 noon followed by burial at St. Paul Cemetery, Arlington. Relatives and friends invited to attend.
