Clarification from Local 76 Union President Tom Ross:

In a recent WBUR interview with Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, regarding safe injection sites for I.V drug users, The Mayor was quoted that Somerville Police, Firefighters and EMT’s are all on board. This could not be further than the truth. The Somerville Firefighters Union was never made aware of or asked their opinion of this proposal. We all agree that actions need to be taken to mitigate the ongoing problems with opioid overdoses but have concerns that Safe injection sites will increase the problems, create additional safety risks and cost the Somerville taxpayers dearly. Not only the cost of running these sites but legal cost the City will encounter defending their rights to run a program that is currently illegal by Federal standards.

  1. NO! NO! NO! NO BIG MISTAKE THEY’LL BE DRUG DEALERS COMING FROM EVERYWHERE, IF YOU DO YOU CAN PUT IT IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD (TEN HILLS)

  2. Another grand standing event for media attention by a lame duck office holder. The first step would be to discuss this with the families who lost their children to the drug epidemic that has been ignored for things such as queer fest, fluff fest and summer streets etc.

We need early intervention , 24 hour assistance and care along with places to assist with long term sobriety,

Somerville hospital is scaling down their services lets be a first and start there.
