Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Frank LAPORTA (Shoplifting) at Assembly Row

On June 12, 2019, I, Officer Tim Van Nostrand, was on duty and assigned to uniform patrol at Assembly Row. At approximately 11:05am I observed a known shoplifter, Frank Laporta, exiting Nike with a reusable bag, walking at a fast pace. Nike manager XXXX was exiting just behind him and informed me he concealed merchandise and exited without paying. I exited my cruiser and called out to Laporta and ordered him to stop. Laporta turned to look at me, then took off running on Grand Union Blvd toward Outback Steakhouse. Laporta ducked between two parked vehicles, and I observed him attempting to hide merchandise under the vehicle. Laporta then came out from the parked vehicles, where I was able to handcuff him.

Officer Justin Buswell (East 4) arrived, and retrieved a red Nike sneaker box from the location where I saw Laporta ducking down. The box contained a pair of sneakers valued at $49.97 (receipt attached to this report). I informed Laporta he was being placed under arrest for Shoplifting by asportation – 3rd and subsequent offense. Officer Robert Anaya transported Laporta in unit 200 to the station where he was booked by LT. W Rymill. CCTV video will be made available by Nike.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Tim Van Nostrand
