On Sunday, March 24, 2019 at approximately 12:30 A.M., I was monitoring vehicular traffic near the intersection of Elm Street and Chester Street when bystanders flagged me down and informed me that a male just came out of the Burren, a bar located at 247 Elm Street and broke the side mirror of a parked vehicle, (a black taxi parked in the cab stand outside the Burren).
I observed a black Ford Fusion bearing Massachusetts registration xxxx with the driver side mirror hanging and the mirror cover on the ground. I also observed a white male wearing a gray sweater, and black pants running West on Elm Street, and several people pointing at him.
I informed Somerville Police control of my location, activated my emergency equipment and followed the male towards Highland Ave. He then ran towards Davis Square train station. I exited the cruiser and chased him on foot and was able to stop him on College Avenue.
I assisted the defendant who was later identified as Jacob SYLVESTER to the ground and placed him in handcuffs. While running away from me, SYLVESTER interfered with vehicular traffic, caused several cars to slam on their brakes to avoid striking him. Once apprehended, SYLVESTER called me a nigger, called females who walked by us derogatory names, and called a black man who walked passed us a nigger. SYLVESTER continued to yell at people on the street for no reason causing public inconvenience.
An off-duty Cambridge Police officer stopped and assisted me until Officer S. Costa and J. Brown arrived on scene. SYLVESTER continued to yell at people on the street and the police officers. SYLVESTER then stated “What the fuck are we waiting for?” “I know I fucked up, I hate cab drivers”.
I proceeded to the Burren and spoke with the doorman who informed me that SYLVESTER attempted to walk out of the bar with a bottle of Corona, and when he took it away from him, he started yelling then walked up to the cab and smashed the side mirror. I also spoke with the cab driver, XXXX, who stated that SYLVESTER broke the mirror for no reason.
SYLVESTER was charged with malicious damage to a motor vehicle c.266 S28, and disorderly conduct c.272 S53. He was transported to the Somerville Police headquarters via unit 200, operated by Officer M. Canty, and booked by Sergeant Marino.
Respectfully submitted,
