Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Reginaldo SIMAO (A&B DW, Strangulation or Suffocation, Threat to Commit Crime)

The following is a summary of the details related to this incident.

On Saturday, November 3, 2018, I, Officer David Ruf, was in full-uniform and assigned to marked cruiser East-4, for the Somerville Police Department. At approximately 7:39 P.M., Officer Hickey (East-1) and I were dispatched to 6x Jaques Street #x for an assault. Officer P. Canty (East-2) also responded as back up.

Upon arrival I met with the victim, later identified as XXXX, who appeared to be very shaken and visibly upset. I asked her what had taken place and she stated the following; she came for a children’s birthday party at her friends who resides on the third floor. The defendant, Reginaldo Simao, came upstairs to the party uninvited and appeared to be intoxicated. She stated she knew Reginaldo for a few years and attempted to speak with him outside the apartment. She then attempted to walk with him downstairs when Reginaldo started to punch her. She stated the assault continued on the stairs to the second floor landing where he grabbed her by the hair and pulled her to the ground. When she was on the ground he then kicked her in her left thigh with his boot (photo attached). She stated while on the ground he grabbed her by throat with one hand and applied substantial pressure that it became very hard for her to breathe. She stated that while this was all going on, she kept screaming for help and other party goers intervened and separated them and he went down to the first floor. She stated at some point during the assault he stated he was going to kill her. I offered medical attention to XXXX, but she refused.

I then spoke with a witness, later identified as XXXX, who stated she lives in the xxxx that shares a wall with 6x Jacques. She stated that she heard noise and came down to the first floor. She stated that she witnessed Reginlado with the knife (photo attached) waving it around attempting to go back upstairs. She stated Reginlado was speaking Portuguese and stating he was going to go up there and kill everyone. XXXX and her dad intervened and did not allow him to go back upstairs. She stated that Reginaldo’s roommate was telling him to drop the knife and that he finally threw it back in the kitchen when units arrived on scene.

I attempted to speak with Reginaldo about what had taken place, but due to him being intoxicated he was just loud and not cooperative. Reginaldo has a minor cut to his head that I offered medical attention for and he refused. At this time based upon the victim and witness statements, Reginaldo was placed under arrest for the following;

M.G.L c265 / §15A  Assault and Battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot)

M.G.L c265 / §15D  Strangulation

M.G.L c275 / §2     Threat to commit a crime

Reginlado was transported by Unit #200, Officer McNally to Somerville Police Headquarters where he was booked by Sgt. Isidoro.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer David Ruf #334

Somerville Police Department
