Emmet, a Somerville high class of 70 graduate who cherished his many friends and was proud of his Somerville roots.

Emmet Franklin (Frankie) Smith III will be sadly missed here in Somerville by many.

Emmet’s obituary:

Emmet Franklin (Frankie) Smith III, 66, formerly of Somerville and now residing in Lynn, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 19, 2018 following a prolonged illness. Emmet had a lifelong commitment to the town of Somerville. He was an avid sportsman and played youth baseball and was a starter on the high school football team. He cherished his many friends and was proud of his Somerville roots. Emmet graduated from Somerville High School in 1971 and attended Northeastern University and University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

Born on August 12, 1952, he was the son of Emmet F. and Elizabeth (Kelley) Smith of Somerville. He was the father of Seana Smith of Medford, Michael Smith of South Boston, and the late Liam Smith of Dingle, Ireland; He was the proud and loving “Papa Berries” to Ella Smith of Medford. Emmet is also survived by his siblings Elizabeth (Smith) Roche of Medford, Thomas Smith of Peabody, Kelley (Smith) Snell and her husband Jim Snell of Somerville, Barbara (Smith) Hennelly of Quincy and Diane Smith of Medford. He is predeceased by his brothers the late Barry T. Smith of Somerville and Burt Taylor of Woburn. He will be sorely missed by his many loving and devoted family and friends.

Emmet was a member of the Malden Irish-American Club and was member of their bagpipe band. He had a deep and abiding love for his Irish-American heritage and enjoyed the many trips he took to Ireland to visit relatives and friends. He loved the Irish music and would sit in on “sessions” at the local pubs with his Great Uncle Tom Jordan. Emmet was actively involved in the Food Pantry in Lynn and the Bread of Life project. He was a devoted sports fan and loved to watch the Boston Red Sox and the Patriots play and win. He was actively following the Sox series until his passing. Emmet had a kind and loving soul, a subtle wit, merciless humor and an infectious laugh. We will miss you Emmet and will always remember your easy and mischievous smile, the twinkle in your eye, your sweetness, compassion and playfulness – whether playing music in a band, cajoling the kids or helping others less fortunate. Rest in peace until we meet again.

Emmet’s funeral was held on Monday, October 29th at Saint Anne’s Church in Somerville. A private burial service will take place at a later date.
