Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Dijon SACKIE (RS MV, Unlicensed Op MV) & Warrant

On Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 11:28 A.M., while travelling West on Broadway, I randomly queried the license plate of the vehicle directly in front of my cruiser (RI registration xxxx). The results showed that the vehicle was stolen out of Providence RI  ORI/RI0040900.

I confirmed the status with Somerville Police and stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Temple Street and Sewall Street, public ways in the city of Somerville. I approached the driver and asked him to shut the engine and hand me the keys, then removed the driver and passenger from the vehicle and placed them in handcuffs.

Due to the nature of the stop, Officers Brioso, Soares, Goulart and Sergeant McCarey responded as backup. The driver did not have any form of identification on him and identified himself as XXXXX D.O.B xxxxx, the passenger was identified as YYYY D.O.B yyyy. Officer Soares conducted a pat frisk of the driver and passenger and recovered two clear plastic bags containing a green leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, one from each.

When I informed the operator that the vehicle was reported stolen, he stated “I borrowed it from my grandmother” I asked him when he borrowed the vehicle and he replied “two days ago, on Tuesday  05/22/2018 around 6:00 P.M.” It should be noted the vehicle was reported stolen on 05/22/2018 at 12:56 A.M.

Officer Buswell contacted Providence, RI Police and informed them that the vehicle was located and the operator is stating he borrowed it from the owner. Providence Police contacted the owner and asked them if “XXXX” borrowed the vehicle and were told they do not know anyone with that name.

I informed the operator that he was under arrest for receiving a stolen motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle without a license. The operator then said his real name was Dijon Sackie D.O.B xxxx.

Sakie was transported to the Somerville Police Department via unit 200, operated by Officer Desrochers, and booked by Lieutenant Sheehan.

I issued a citation for city ordinance violation to Sakie and YYYY for open container of marijuana, and issued YYYY CMVI# T0700568 for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Sakie stated he has a learner’s permit but not in his possession.

During the booking process, Sakie’s fingerprints were taken and a warrant for parole violation was located out of Bridgeport CT. Sakie was charged with fugitive from justice c.276 S20A.

Respectfully,

Officer Samir Messaoudi #312
