The City is pursuing plans to move the Public Safety Building to the former site of the Cobble Hill Shopping Center at 90 Washington St. in East Somerville.
The Public Safety Building serves as the Somerville Police Department headquarters, and it’s also home to the Fire Department’s Engine 3. Since 1985 it’s been in Union Square at the site of a repurposed MBTA car barn that suffers from flooding.
The City began a needs assessment study in 2016, and on May 24, Mayor Joe Curtatone submitted a request to the Board of Aldermen to purchase the plot at 90 Washington St. The goal is to construct a Public Safety Building that addresses the needs of the police and fire departments. Plans also call for an ultra-efficient building that contributes to Somerville’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
