Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Rudy ADAM (Assault w. Dangerous Weapon – Knife)

On November 29, 2017, I, Officer Bork was patrolling area East 1 for the Somerville Police Department. At approximately 01:06, East 3, Officer Beckford, and I, were dispatched to 76 Franklin Street for a report of a male threatening another male with a possible knife or hammer after he asked him to turn down the music. East 4, Officer Ruf, and Sierra 8, Sgt. Perrone, responded as well.

Upon arrival, we made contact with the reporting party, XXXXX. XXXXX stated that there has been an ongoing issue with the male party downstairs playing his music loudly all hours of the night. When I asked him what had occurred that evening he stated that he knocked on the door and a male, later identified as Rudy Adam, answered the door with a hammer in one hand and an unknown object in his waistband, said nothing, and then shut the door. XXXXX stated that Adam was still in that same room which was located on the right hand side of the main entrance to the residence. We could hear the music playing loudly from outside the residence while we were talking to XXXXX.

Officer Beckford and I entered the residence and had to knock on the door multiple times for Adam to come to the door. Adam opened the door and immediately stared directly past us with a blank stare and went to go by us in an attempt to go upstairs towards XXXXX. Officer Beckford and I asked Adam to step back, at which time Adam moved his arm and I noticed that he was holding a large kitchen knife with a black handle in his left arm and a hammer in his right hand. I immediately shouted “knife knife”, told Adam to drop the knife and the hammer, grabbed his hand/ arm with the knife causing him to drop it. Simultaneously, Officer Beckford tactically grabbed him and got his right arm behind his back. I placed his left arm behind his back and applied handcuffs. Adam continued being hostile and showed signs of aggression by screaming in the middle of the street while we waited for the transport wagon.

Adam was transported by Unit #200, Officer Martini, to Somerville Police Headquarters where he was booked in the usual manner by Lt. Lavey. During the booking process, Adam refused to answer any questions and remained completely silent.

After being transported, I talked to XXXXX again who seemed extremely afraid and nervous. I asked him again to clarify what happened and he said that when he knocked on the door Adams answered, said nothing, but did motion with the knife a stabbing motion in his direction. XXXXX stated that he was afraid of Adam, and he was advised about how to obtain a harassment prevention order.

Also in the residence during the incident was Adam’s father, YYYYY. YYYYY stated that he is very afraid of his son and that he has had issues with him in the past. He also stated that Adam refuses to get help even though he has tried to get him to go see doctors. YYYYY was advised about obtaining a restraining order and about obtaining a Section 35.

Officer Ruf and Beckford discovered an additional knife located in a small fridge by the door in Adam’s room. They also discovered a screwdriver on the floor right by the door as you entered the room. Both items and the knife and hammer recovered from Adam’s person were all entered into evidence.

Adam was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon c265/15B/A.

Respectfully submitted,

Officer Christine Bork #327
