BOSTON – I am happy that former speaker Sal DiMasi is being released from federal prison. He will be with his family, and have the possibility of decent health care. Keeping terminally ill and incapacitated people locked up doesn’t serve public safety, costs enormous amounts of money, and is inhumane. Had he been sentenced to state prison, this never would have been an option because Massachusetts is one of only a handful of states without a medical release law. Hopefully we can change that soon.
