BOSTON – The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF) has endorsed state Senator Pat Jehlen for re-election to the Second Middlesex district seat of the Massachusetts Senate. PPAF is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and is working to elect bold and steadfast sexual and reproductive health champions like Jehlen to the Massachusetts legislature.

“Senator Jehlen has always been a vocal advocate for sexual and reproductive health throughout her 25-year tenure on Beacon Hill. First as a state Representative and now as a state Senator, she has been dedicated to protecting reproductive rights, expanding access to sexual and reproductive health care and comprehensive sexuality education, and achieving greater health equity for all. Senator Jehlen is a great champion of Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund’s values and we are proud to endorse her,” Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, PPAF President, said.

The Second Middlesex senate district encompasses Medford and Somerville, and portions of Cambridge and Winchester. Senator Jehlen has represented the district since 2005. She previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1991 until her election to the Senate. The primary election is September 8.

Senator Jehlen has a long record of championing accessible sexual and reproductive health care and policies that benefit women’s health. She has supported multiple contraceptive equity bills requiring insurers to cover all FDA-approved contraceptive methods, and supports greater protections of patient confidentiality. In 2014, she co-sponsored legislation creating safety measures to protect patients coming to Planned Parenthood and other sexual and reproductive health centers just weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state’s buffer zone law. She has long fought to close the gender wage gap and sponsored the widely supported pay equity bill currently before the House. She is also a champion and co-sponsor of legislation to expand access to medically accurate, age-appropriate, and comprehensive sexuality education in public schools.

“Dedicated champions like Senator Jehlen have positioned Massachusetts to be a leader in health care access and reproductive justice,” Childs-Roshak said. “Senator Jehlen has prioritized sexual and reproductive health care and other health equity issues throughout her career and she has the experience needed to continue leading the Commonwealth forward.”

The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) is the advocacy and political arm of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM). Formed in 1984, PPAF believes that working within the political process is critical to advancing PPLM’s mission to increase access to sexual and reproductive health services and comprehensive sexuality education for women, men, and families across Massachusetts.
