Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Shoplifting at Stop & Shop

On Friday, January 15, 2016, Officers Soares, Dottin, and I, were dispatched to775 McGrath Highway, Stop & Shop, for two detained shoplifters.

Upon our arrival, I was met by XXXXX, a loss prevention officer for Stop & XXXXX. Elliot advised us that he had detained Melissa Mercogliano (DOB: XX/XX/XX) and John Macinnes (DOB: XX/XX/XX) for shoplifting. Surveillance footage showed Mercogliano and Macinnes placing several items into the carriages without being scanned with the portable handheld device. XXXXX also stated that Macinnes exited the store with a carriage full of unpaid groceries, while Mercogliano was at the register paying for a small portion of the groceries. The overall total amount of grocery equaled $293.14, however $88.35 of that amount was paid for by Mercogliano.

After speaking to XXXXX and watching the surveillance footage, both Mercogliano and Macinnes were placed under arrest, and an inventory search was performed. While inventorying Macinnes’ property, 4 loose tablets of 800mg Gabapentin was discovered in his right front jacket pocket. Note: according to the Stop & Shop receipt Mercogliano EBT card contained a balance of $138.30.

A copy of the video footage was dropped off at the Somerville Police Station by a Stop & Shop employee. The video and tablets were logged, tagged, and secured.

Respectfully submitted,
