Real Life Somerville Police Stories:Shoplifting at Target

Michael TAYLOR Arrest

On July 12, 2015 at approx. 9:00 PM I, along with Officer Randy Isaacs, were dispatched to Target, 180 Somerville Avenue for a reported shoplifter cutting open boxes of merchandise and hiding items in his pockets. Upon arrival Officer Isaacs and Loss Prevention Officer XXXXX were escorting a male to the Security Office. Officer Isaacs and I then did a safety pat down of the male, identified at booking as Michael Taylor, because LP Officer XXXXX observed him with a razor.
Inside his left front pocket we recovered a double edge box cutter type razor blade and secured it. Also recovered were 2 memory disks, 1 a 32 GB Sandisk and a 64 GB Sony that carry a total value of $74.98. Also on his person was a $20 bill but no identification.
XXXXX stated to me that he was on the floor and watching Mr Taylor actually cut the packages open with a razor blade and place the items removed from these packages into his pockets to hide them and then discard the empty boxes. This scenario was also being videotaped by security.
I asked Mr Taylor his name 3 times and Mr Taylor, unknown to me until booking, refused to answer the question or give me any identifying information so that I could verify and pass that to Loss Prevention for court summons and trespass order purposes. I asked if he had any identification and he stated he did not. I then made the decision to place Mr Taylor under arrest for Shoplifting by Asportation.

Respectfully Submitted,

Officer Alan Monaco #234
