Mayor’s Annual “Old Time” Senior Picnic: Wednesday, August 6th / Rain date, Friday, August 8th – 11:00 A.M. to
2:00 P.M. – Powderhouse Park – It’s a great day filled with lunch, dancing, music, entertainment and prizes galore Tickets available at our Holland Street Center, our Ralph & Jenny Center, our Cross Street Center, the Mayor’s Office & a representative from the SCOA will be going to every senior building to distribute tickets. Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, CT: Tuesday, August 19th – For a $25.00 fee you receive transportation, $10. Food coupon and a $10. Free bet. Check in time is 8:00 A.M. at the Holland Street Center and 8:15 A.M. at the Ralph & Jenny Center with an approximate return time of 8:00 P.M. All aboard the S.S. Lobster Roll – Tuesday, August 26th – Relax & enjoy this 90 minute cruise offering great views of Sesuit Harbor & Cape Cod Bay from the decks of the “Lobster Roll” dinner cruise ship. Your $52. We Sold A Winner! Documentary: Thursday, August 28th – 10:00 – 11:30 A.M. – Holland Street Atrium – The SCOA invites you to a visual presentation and discussion by Somerville Arts Council Fellow Edie Bresler – A social documentary that looks at state lotteries. Lowell Spinners: Thursday, August 28th – For just $31.00 you receive your transportation, seating, all you can eat BBQ and a night of America’s favorite pastime – Baseball! New England Goes Country – Thursday, September 18th – Danversport Yacht Club, come back to the days of cowboy boots & hats, saddle up those horses and enjoy the music of Jimmy Lehoux & Nicole Frechette as well as country’s upcoming stars. The fee of $72. Includes transportation, entertainment & (meal choice) boneless breast of chicken or fresh scrod (includes cheese & crackers, salad, rolls, bread, vegetables, potatoes, dessert, coffee & tea.) Fall Foliage Trip! East Hill Farm, Troy, NH: Tuesday, September 30th – Enjoy the fall foliage and a delectable homemade family style lunch including: tomato cheddar soup, fresh baked bread, fritters with maple syrup, roast pork with gravy, mashed potatoes, green garden peas, applesauce, berry cobbler, coffee, tea & milk. We will be visiting Allison’s Apple Orchard for apples, pumpkins and lots of other fall goodies. Free Pumpkin included! Honor Flight! Documentary: Monday, October 27th – 9:30 – 11:30 A.M. – Honor Flight is a heartwarming documentary about four living WWII veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. LGBT EVENTS

LGBT Lunch – Monday, August 11th – 11:30 A.M. Somerville Cambridge Elder Services will provided a hot or cold lunch – suggested contribution of $2.00 – RSVP required no later than 2:30 P.M. Thursday, August 7th.

LGBT Advisory Group – Meets on the 2nd Monday of each month. Our next meeting is Monday, July 14th at 4:30 P.M. We would love to have you be part of our group.

LGBT Dinner & Movie – Monday, August 18th – 5:30 meal time – 6:30 movie time –August movie is “Reaching For The Moon” and back by popular demand is pizza & salad for dinner. $5.00 fee. Must RSVP by 10:00 AM on Monday, August 18th.

LBT Women Fit-4-Life – Fitness and Nutrition Classes. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:00 P.M. $10 a month fee – scholarships available & it just might be covered under your insurance. We have available slots and would love to have you. Men’s Group – Meets the first Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. This group is led by our volunteer, Norbert DeAmato. Are you recently retired? Looking to connect with other men in the community? Join our men’s group where you can connect with old friends and make new ones. All men 55 and over are welcome. Caregiver Support Group – Meets the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Our Social Worker, Suzanne Norton, leads this group. Are you caring for a parent, relative, spouse or close friend? Feeling isolated or overwhelmed? You are not alone! Come share your experience and practical support. Open to all and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in joining, have any questions or require additional information please call 617-625-6600 Ext. 2300 and ask to speak to Suzanne.

Veterans Group – Meets the third Monday of each month from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. Our Social Worker, Suzanne Norton, leads this group. Are you a veteran? The Veterans Group is the perfect opportunity to socialize, have solidarity, to reminisce and to meet other veterans. Low Vision Support Group – Meets the second (2nd) Tuesday of each month from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. Our Social Worker, Suzanne Norton, leads this group. Do you know someone who has trouble seeing? Do you have low vision? Join our Low Vision Support Group for educational and informative information and peer support in a confidential environment. Book Club – Meets the first Friday of each month from 10:00 to 11:30 A.M. Senior Project Manager, Janine Lotti, leads this group. Join this group to read and discuss a different book each month. Gardening Club – Meets the second Monday of each month starting at 9:00 A.M. and running for an hour most times. Our volunteer, Vilma Sullivan, leads this group. Brain Games – Meets the first Tuesday of each month starting at 10:00 A.M. This group is led by our volunteers Eileen Jones & Jan Ciganelli. Engaging as a group in brain healthy activities. English Conversations – Meets every Tuesday & Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. at our Cross Street Center located at 165 Broadway. Ana Price, our Cross Street Director, leads this group. No books, no tests, no stress – just a great group of older adults from all over the world who help each other to listen, speak and learn English.

IMPORTANT NEWS

The Somerville Council on Aging in conjunction with the Somerville Fire Department are installing free, new smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors to eligible Somerville older adults as part of the Senior SAFE Program. If you are an older adult (60 years of age or older) and live in Somerville (own or rent) please contact Maureen Bastardi, Outreach Worker at the Somerville Council on Aging at 617-625-6600, Ext. 2300 to find out how to get yours.
