This month is the 5 year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder by police in Minneapolis. It was a tragic moment on May 25th 2020 that sparked outrage and protests across the country. 5 years later his family is still working to make a difference in his name. This Wednesday May 21st, George Floyd’s Uncle will be visiting Boston to support a press conference demanding more change.
Selwyn Jones is the co-founder of the Justice 929 Organization, the charity focused on promoting civil rights and creating change in honor of his nephew George Floyd. The nonprofit seeks to aid the thousands of individuals that have been wrongfully convicted, help families affected by police brutality, rally for more reform in the law enforcement and justice systems, support the homeless, find missing persons, work with the youth, improve mental health, and fight gun violence.
Channeling his grief into activism and in an effort to save and preserve lives, Selwyn has also helped develop the MYTH app, a tool that can record police interactions, send out a panic alert to emergency contacts for situations with law officers, domestic violence, missing persons and more. The app will be available soon and all its videos are stored in a secured server.
The press conference and rally in Boston will be held at the Massachusetts State House on May 21st at 2pm. Selwyn will join event organizer Lynn Currier of Skweda Solutions and the families of 16 wrongfully convicted men from the state, part of the Coalition of Judiciary Accountability. They will be speaking about social injustice, police brutality, and the area’s falsely imprisoned inmates.
