Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,
Bill, A story for the Newspaper from a former resident of Somerville. The book is out: A book written by Ed Leonard, Author. The Ted Williams Alumni are in this book who came to our Jimmy Fund Event 7-13-24. A great read for Ted Williams Camp Alum, and Baseball Historians. The title is: “The Overlooked Legacy of Ted Williams”. It is available for purchase on Amazon . It is a non-fiction book. It is printed as a hard cover for $28 and a soft cover for $20.
(Prices plus change) it is also available as a Kindle computer read for less money. I want people to get the printed copy because it has details and illustrations that often require paging back and fourth etc.
A brief description. – Ted’s legacy’s as a baseball player for 20 years less 4 years in the Navy and a decorated Marine fighter pilot for 2 years is well documented. His creation of a Boys Baseball Camp in Lakeville, MA with 3 locals as partners which Existed for 30 years has been overlooked. He was full time present every summer from 1961 to 1968 supervising and participating in its daily operation. He considered Lakeville one of his 3 homes where he owned a house and lived with two of his three wives during this time – New Brunswick, Canada, Islamorada, FL, and Lakeville, MA.
He wove himself into the fabric of the town and gave of himself , his resources and his name to make this effort a success training more than 10,000 young boys to be disciplined men of integrity of high character without drawing any notoriety to himself.
He was truly a Great person as well as a talented baseball player, fisherman and hero for his country. He also gave compassion and resources to sick children with cancer by supporting the Jimmy Fund from its founding in 1948 until he died. The Boys Baseball Camp Alumni have met every 2 years since 1993 at the Ted Williams Camp In Lakeville raising funds for the Jimmy Fund while enjoying telling stories of their unforgettable FUN years playing baseball in the presence of Ted.
This is a long intro – you may want to write your own intro when advising your contacts to buy the book. Your support of me made this book possible. Thank you.
Ed Leonard, Author & Joe LoRusso, Ted Williams Camp Alum (1975-1986).
