Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line: What Has Somerville Become as a Society?

Dear Billy T and Somerville/Medford News Weekly Speakup Line,

Last week a family member of a Somerville High School called the school and asked the school if they can give their daughter a ride home because they had a family emergency. The school had a police officer pick up the daughter at Somerville High to give the daughter a ride home after requested by the girl’s family.

Then suddenly another student came out of nowhere, opened the cruiser door and told the students in the cruiser to get out and that she didn’t have to be in the car with this cop. The cop then trying to protect his passenger shut the door and the other student begin to scuffle with the police officer until they both ended up on the ground. The aggressive student was scooted away by friends and the cruiser pulled away to deliver his passenger as requested. Now all of a sudden these students are telling their school department and the police what to do. The students have organized a demonstration for this coming Thursday at the Somerville public library on Highland Ave. It’s bad enough that the cops have to deal with this BS on top of massive depleting of resources and demeanor of police officers. What have we become as a society?
