Real Life Somerville Police Stories: Robert RICHARDS (Receive Stolen Property) (BPD Warrants

On January 10th, 2021, I, Officer James Torres, was in full uniform, while assigned to marked unit East 4, during the day shift.

At approximately 10:09 AM, I as well as Officer Joseph Moreira (East 1), responded to the area of Temple Street and Derby Street, for a report of a white male, riding a blue bicycle, blue mask, yellow hooded sweatshirt and backpack, circling the area, suspiciously checking out houses.

Shortly thereafter, Officer Moreira and I located a male matching that description in the area of 49 Fellsway West (Foss Park), just a street over from where the reporting party observed the suspicious male. I approached this male and asked if I could speak with him. The male complied and explained to me that he was coming from Walgreens (299 Broadway) where he purchased a phone charger and was now on his way home. I explained to the male that the reason I wanted to speak with him, was because it was reported that a male matching his description, was seen in the area, suspiciously checking out houses. I asked this male if he could identify himself to me, in which he provided me with the name of Robert Richards and a DOB of XXXX. After querying that information through the CJIS system, I observed that Mr. Richards had a Default Warrant out of Boston District Court (Docket # 1903CR000050JC). Mr. Richards was placed in handcuffs (double locked).

In a search incident to arrest, I located several packages inside of Mr. Richards backpack, belonging to a XXXX located at 400 Mystic Ave #XXX. I also observed another three packages, with a bar code as well as what appeared to be Mandarin writing on the packages. While I was looking at the packages, Mr. Richards stated to me that he had taken them from the front of the apartment building, located at 400 Mystic Avenue.

Mr. Richards was ultimately transported to the Somerville Police Headquarters in unit 200, operated by Officer Daniel Dell’sola and booked in the usual manner by Lieutenant G Rymill.

Mr. Richards will be charged with the following: Receiving Stolen Property -$1200 (C266/S60).

It should be noted that I delivered the packages back to 400 Mystic Avenue where they were placed in the vestibule.

Respectfully submitted,
Officer James Torres
