Dear Billy T and Somerville Speakup Line,
Attached are some pictures of the city's new IDEA (ART, no engineering or codes involved) on controlling traffic. Common sense: Straight lines make for less accidents. That's a common starting point for civil engineering roads. The city's new ideas = 'Art vs. Code'...Looks pretty on paper, hurts people in real life. Codes are designed to allow steering radius of emergency vehicles & to prevent accidents between more than one lane of traffic. The roads are too tight for these 'paper-pretty' designs. Our cities have decided to implement accident-prone designs. Kick-out curbs are a BIG ONE. Cyclists have to steer around them, right into traffic. These latest white poles (replacing the more expensive color ones that were broken over winter); 90% of them are mowed down BECAUSE firetrucks, emergency vehicles, delivery trucks & such cannot get around them. I believe their new IDEA is suffering from an erectile dysfunction disorder. See attached pictures. The two at Rogers Ave are still standing because they're too close for most vehicles to wedge between. They've seen no action, completely blocking the intersection; unless you want to damage your car. Street codes & ordinances are engineered for a reason. Our city officials have none of this knowledge, choose not to apply it if they do; are placing people at risk of injury or death; don't use calculators & keep painting it up w/pretty colors as they make DARK & deadly art of our streets. Each of these white poles costs ~$250/each, plus labor of 4 guys to install. Then add the double-police details at $800/hour/each at every corner. Then add this 'new plan' for Powder House Blvd. It will only add more chaos & create more danger to ALL PARTIES. We, the taxpayers, will pay for the screw-up of a plan & the re-design of a probably more screwed up plan down the road. How many people will pay with their lives or injury as our city planners ignore VERY WELL STUDIED & PROVEN ENGINEERING & CODES??? See picture of Tufts solution to avoid some of the problem. Half the problem is the population expecting people to stop. The other half is simplifying intersections so they can register the bright light & crosswalk. One simple plan: blinking lights ABOVE each cross-walk intersection triggered by the button or motion sensor. AND, instructions like Tufts has painted on sidewalk to remind people to look before crossing. AMAZING, we live in a world that has to teach this to adults. ALL OF THESE alleged improvements have created more accidents and deaths. No traffic studies were done to gauge the effects of additional traffic on Dane Street, Park Street, etc. If they had, parking would be banned & bikes would be re-routed from these streets. The new route for buses WILL cause accidents & at least a few deaths before they decide to acknowledge these ENGINEERED, written in code BAD decisions. In the meantime, the taxpayers will be stuck paying off the lawsuits our irresponsible city planners have created. By the designs they're using, I believe they WANT the accidents & news crews. Bottom line: if you own property or drive in this city, you have a target on your back for liability in someone else's stupidity. Hope you're well & we appreciate you shining light on their deceit & darkness. Thank you!
